Subject: Charity Mitten Drive for "Roots of Peace"
Hello PH knitters and crocheters,
Knit PH co-pilot Eliza B. has a request for a knit charity drive for Roots of Peace. This request goes out to knitters and crocheters alike. This a very good use of your time + left-over yarn. Look deep into your hearts and your stash and make something warm for a good cause. See details below for FREE mitten patterns made available for this cause.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eliza B. writes:
I just got news of another charity knitting drive, this one with a deadline soon approaching. If you can churn out a pair of children's mittens in the next week (I know, it's really soon) I can collect them at the meet up on Nov 11. I can also plan to stop at Freddy's on Nov 16, but please let me know if you need me to do so, since I am currently not planning to be there. E-mail: [email protected]
We have just been presented with this special opportunity to send more mittens through Roots of Peace and participate at their upcoming program at the U.S. State Department. Time is short, but we know we can do it … let’s give it our best … as always … mittens can be knit up in a week and easily popped in an envelope.
Our mittens will first travel to Washington, D.C., where Roots of Peace is honoring Afghan Ambassador Jawad for his service to his homeland. Roots of Peace would like to show our mittens to the dignitaries as a tangible example of how North Americans reach out in friendship and peace to the children of Afghanistan. Roots of Peace will subsequently transport the mittens to Kabul for distribution to girls and boys for their winter wear.
Please make mittens in wool (or other animal fiber), sized for school kids of ages 6-16 years. Use bright, happy colors. We’d love our huge pile of mittens to be in an infinite array of hues and patterns – distinctive mittens for all the individual girls and boys. Please tie or safety-pin the paired mittens together. (Gloves are OK, but no thumbless mittens, please.)

My family raises alpacas and they have yarn and roving to sell. I will be home for Turkey and could bring some back if anyone is interested. They have both natural colors, with a picture of the animal they came from, as well as many dyed yarns. PM me if interested.

We have quite a few spinners in our Knit PH group, so that would be sweet! Does your family have a website or blog? I'll PM. Thanks a bunch Scarlet. -

I think that we all need to hear about this! Can you post more info? -
This is definitely a 'pics or they don't exist' moment. Even with pictures I'm never sure alpacas are real. Sort of like Jackalopes. Just too crazy looking. Until I see one in the wild, I'm going to believe they were created in a lab somewhere.
-
Huh! Their website is lavenderfieldsalpacas.com and I assure you they are quite real! Crazy looking? They are so cute! To see them in the wild though, you have to go to Peru.
Working on getting some pics of the roving and yarn types and a price list. Should have it this weekend. As you may see, their website is for the animals and not their wares. -
Oh, how to buy.
If you put in your orders with me, I will bring it back after Thanksgiving and we can meet for cash and carry. -
Subject: Mittens?
Hello Mitten makers,
Just a small reminder about the mitten charity drive. I will be collecting mittens at the Freddy's on Sunday evening November 16th for Eliza B.
Now back the discussion on Alpaca roving. -
The folks weren't able to get it together this weekend due to some farm visits and a show. Soon!
-
I am going to try to knit a pair of mittens knit for this, I would love to, they don't take much time! I'll drop you a note if I can get a pair knit up by the 16th, Tony...
Scarlett...any baby alpaca yarn? How should we know what they've got? thanks! -
I have some pics of the roving but cannot figure out how to attach them from this old computer. I would be happy to e-mail them if you want to pm me an e-mail address. It's $4 an oz.
There is baby alpaca roving, so there must be babe yarn as well in the same colors - anything natural from black to silver and chocolate to white and some mixed. The skeins vary from $12 - $18 I think. -
I'm not spinning these days, Scarlett, thank you, though!
-
Yarn too! Skeins of natural fiber are $12-18 or dyed fiber are a little less.
-
Subject: Mittens
Thanks sje, I'll drop by the shop and pick up mittens if want, just PM me. I have to get busy myself. Oi.
Speaking of mittens, Eliza B. just sent me a small note about hand sizes:
"...there’s a general agreement that the smallest sized mittens we should be making (to fit a 6 year old) should measure at least 5” from the fingertips to the beginning of the cuff (this does not include the cuff). I know it’s tempting to make smaller mittens (man, they are cute!) but in this case I’m not sure they can be used."
Epilogue:
Children from other countries are much smaller than our ginormous American sized youngins. Please don't make them too big.
Good Luck and good knit. We now return you to the Alpaca discussion. -
scarlett, you've got to upload the picture first somewhere else (like flickr or photobucket). then follow the instructions in the "ask brooklynian" forum.
-
Righto-o she did it!
OK, so there's a good representation of the roving colors and mixtures, as well as batting and roving in quantity. Roving is $4 an oz.
The yarn skeins come in these same colors at $12-18 per skein.
The names on them are of the animals from whence the fiber came. My parents name them after a different type of artist each year, so you may recognize some singers, painters, authors etc. -
I want some alpaca fur! In the form of a swearter. That someone else knitted. For me.
-
Guess you want to make friends with my mom then! You fly home for turkey and I will boxer sit!

Deal. I should mention that Oscar has plans to go to grandma's for Thanksgiving. And grandma is crazy. Good luck!! -
Does Grandma drink? That's generally how I get through the holidays with my family.

I don't know much about fiber-art...but that sure looks a lot like a bag of alpaca bacon to me!

Alpaca, bacon of the Andes. Mmmmm. Scarlett, those skeins look incredible. Looks like your parents' yarn has developed a fibrous following. What is the yardage and yarn weight per skein?

-
Mom says most of the skeins are 200 yards and "sport weight" or about 3 oz.
If you are interested in a particular type - softer or better or a certain project, my mom can definitely help with selection. -
Dad says some are 100 yards and "DK weight."
-
Any takers on the yarn or roving?
-
Well nobody ordered yarn or roving, but I did bring some back. I will be back on the farm in a few weeks so please let me know if you want to purchase.
Howdy, Stranger!
