Dog foods with fish ingredients
Do any of your pooches eat foods with fish in them? If yes, which ingredient and have you noticed them developing fishy breath?
I'm looking into feeding my girl a high-protein food with minimal grain. It seems most of those involve fish ingredients - usually salmon oil/meal or whitefish oil/meal. The food I have her on now has herring oil as one of the early ingredients (the 10th of 25) and wow is her breath fishy. She's only been on this food about two weeks; before that her breath was probably sweeter than mine!
This sounds silly, I know - but when you have a terrier breathing in your face nonstop begging you for a game of fetch, or crawling up near your head when you're in bed - breath is a big deal!

Wellness brand offers the Simple Solution line. O was on the rice and venison one and his breath didn't smell. Too bad.

It has no grain at all and no meat by-products. It's a bit pricey and Pet Delight carries it. -
Merrick has a dog food that doesn't have grain. My vet recommended it at our last visit with my pup. There are 2 formulations that are not fish based.

thirty bucks for 11 lbs?? WOW. I think the wellness is 40 for 30-35 lbs. Of course, I'm feeding a mutt who lives to eat. If you have a dog that eats normal amounts, this might not be too bad.

My dog is on the Halo Spot's Stew. He was just eating the salmon but due to lack of it when I needed it, it's now a mix of the salmon and chicken.
His breath used to be not very noticeable on Iams, but it's a little off since being on this food. He's a picky eater and loves the food and has much more consistently healthy poop. The breath isn't great, but I wouldn't say fishy, just more like dog breath now. And it's worth it for him to actually enjoy a healthier dog food. -

Yea it is a bit expensive, but its a great dog food. The regular merrick food (which my dog is on) has freeze dried chunks of carrots, peas and potatoes. All in all my dog won't eat anything else anymore. Their canned food is pretty impressive as well. Real chicken instead of chicken formed into wierd dog food like chunks.
I found the Before Grain formula a bit cheaper on pertnetdirect.com

Thanks for the suggestions all. I'll give them a try if our current stuff doesn't work out. Her breath has actually improved; I guess she just needed some time to get used to it. She was on EVO Red Meat Large Bites (42% protein).
The Wellness looked good and I love sweet potato as a dog chow ingredient, but I'm actually looking more now for something with an emphasis on high-protein than particularly low-grain (I initially thought she might be grain sensitive, then realized she just picks up stomach viruses in daycare sometimes). Wellness does make a CORE line which is high-protein (the sensitive tummy stuff is only 20-something percent, unfortunately); that is on my list of things to try later if I give up on the current chow.
The Merrick one suggested does actually have salmon oil in it, but it is good to know it didn't cause fishy-breath. I do, however, really like the idea of the freeze-dried veggies in there.
Thanks again~ -
