Brooklyn Bread Bakery? — Brooklynian

Brooklyn Bread Bakery?

Anyone been there? Am I the only one who thinks they are very high priced and the girls behind the counter behave like zombies? I don't see myself going there anymore.

  • I think the bread is pretty reasonable- I get one of the "small" baguettes which is enough for 3 or 4 dinners worth and it's either 1.75 or 1.25. Not bad, and I think the bread is good. The sammies are expensive but they're HUGE and I generally make at LEAST two meals out of one. I guess it depends on what you're getting.

    Yeah man!
  • The loaf of bread I bought tonight was 3.50, it was a seeded semolina bread. I thought $24 for a regular chocolate laye cake was too much. Maybe it's me

  • Those sandwiches are legit though. #3 and #27 have become staples in my diet. It's expensive, but as long as you don't go too much it's worth it.
  • is this the place near louie g's that has no sign in the window telling you the name of the store?
  • I don't think so Potter- this place has a giant huge red/orange awning.

No, this place is right on the corner of 5th Avenue and 6th Street-you can't miss it. I guess I am just used to buying bread from the bakeries down on Court Street (Caputo's is my favorite for bread) and they are much cheaper. the bread was very good though.
  • BP, the place you're talking about is some weird frenchish kind of place. Their bread isn't very good.
  • brooklyn bread in CG is a disater too. I stopped going 3 years ago. Bread and sandwhiches are good but i could not stand the fools they have behind the counter. EVERY time i went they could not use the register and would charge a different amount every time for te same thing.. like dealing with children.
  • In my experience most of the people working at Brooklyn Bread have been children, or rather high school girls with no experience. That being said I find both their bread and coffee to be excellent, their pastries/cookies are a bit pricey but they're open late (midnight I think) and are certainly the best Italian bread I've been able to find available for purchase after 8pm. (all the other bakeries seem to close before I get back to the slope)
  • Personally, I would prefer they close at 9 and have more down to earth prices. I was talking to my neighbor a little while ago and he said he went in there, bought a small coffee and a bagel with cream cheese and it was almost $5.00.
  • I go there for the bread...it's pricey but the sesame seed and the brick oven baguette and very good. I tried my first sandwich there last week, the #8: turkey, sun dried tomato, avocado, swiss, and Russian dressing. It was good (I don't really get that combination) but it was HUGE. For $10.50 it easily fed my wife and I.

The service, however, is always a nightmare. I don't know what it it but it takes forever to make an order because everyone is jammed between the bread counter and the chairs and everyone bunches up. When you have to pay you have to shuffle in front of everyone and then they don't remember what you ordered. The guy that is always there is nice enough but things just move at a crawl. I will say that there is a dark-haired, blue-eyed counter girl who is so gorgeous that when she's working I completely don't mind the wait.

That being said I'll continue to buy my sandwiches at Pollio two doors down.
  • Brooklyn Bread has 2 more locations, Paneantico in Bay Ridge and one more (i forget what it's called) in Staten Island. I lived in Bay Ridge for many years, and loved the place there. Prices are higher in PS though, I guess because their rent is higher. But I always found their quality of pastries very good and consistent, and their coffee - fantastic. Their Italian flag cookies are perfectly moist, not too sweet and are covered in tasty dark chocolate. And yeah, their waitresses have no idea what they are doing, but who cares when the cookies are sooo yummy!

    Seconded on both statements. Hosanna!

Royal Crown in SI....that was the first place then the place in Bay Ridge and then the Brooklyn Bread Locations.

I have never had any issue with the service behind the counter. IMO they have great pastries and breads. Try a chocolate pasticiotto and the sfogliatella. (Basta-chote and shvee-adell)
