Crazy Car Accident on Prospect Ave
About 11pm there was sudden sound of screeching brakes and then the loud, terrifying and unmistakable boom of cars colliding. I believe there were 3 successive booms of an impact. I rushed outside from my apartment near the intersection of Prospect and 11th Avenue and many others had come outside as well. Down Prospect Avenue at the northwest corner of Prospect Avenue and Terrace Place a Honda Accord coupe with only the driver inside was sitting sideways in the street after it had viciously slammed in to 2 parked cars. The driver seemed to be conscious. He was trying to start his car and possibly leave the scene but it was sufficiently damaged and would not start. The driver's side door would not open. I did not get very close but my impression was that he was drunk and/or had sustained a concussion or was dazed by the impact and air bag. From the damage of his car and the 2 parked cars hit (one which was pushed so far that it had dislodged what I think was a box for telephone systems) it seems he was speeding excessively and/or was drunk. The screeching brake sound was relatively brief which indicates a very late reaction or mechanical failure. I didn't stick around long enough to figure out which direction he was coming from - whether going uphill on Prospect Avenue and just going through the intersection with Terrace Place before a sharp curve or downhill on Prospect around the curve just before the traffic light at Terrace Place. There is also the less likely possibility he was going the wrong way on Terrace Place and then collided with the parked cars. My guess would be he was going east on Prospect Avenue downhill and did not adjust for the curve as you approach the traffic light at Terrace Place. Whether the driver was drunk, distracted, speeding, careless, had a medical problem or a car malfunction one thing is clear - this is a very dangerous intersection and stretch of road. The traffic light is behind a sharp curve and the traffic signal is also obscured by trees. People speed up and down this stretch of Prospect Avenue often. This accident could easily have involved pedestrians and/or other cars with occupants. This accident was late at night but there is also an elementary school nearby on 11th Avenue and children cross with no guard at Prospect Avenue and 11th. Some of my neighbors were discussing the dangerous nature of this intersection and stretch of road and how it should be addressed. A suggestion of speed bump was mentioned. This may be a good idea. I also think anything obstructing view of the traffic light should be addressed and perhaps adding another signal at a more visible spot. Is this something that would be best brought up to the community board or the NYC Department of Transportation?

People fly up/down Prospect all the time. I do think something should change, but not quite sure where/what
-
Im not sure how to resolve the issue but a speed bump often makes things more dangerous. People fly down the road, hit the bump and lose control. A speed bump was added on 19th Street a few years ago for the same reason and was removed shortly thereafter b/c of the additional danger.

some sort of traffic calming should be implemented. i agree, no speed bumps, but perhaps a landscaped median at the intersection or a pedestrian island should do the trick

How about a life size picture of a police car with a radar gun pointed out the window -
I don't think that is going to deter anyone. How about actual police cars with an actual radar gun giving out tickets.

if they had any success with this, they should also go to Bartel Pritchard Square and stop people from making turns from the wrong lanes and almost running people down on 15th street -
That is a serious problem as well and this also happens in the Circle at the other end of PPSW. I think the first step for the traffic circles are to have better signage and points violations that accompany any traffic tickets. People also like to speed up and down PPSW from Bartel Pritchard Square to 11th Avenue. The police need to seriously step up traffic enforcement. This is just my opinion but perhaps they spend too much time on the ramps of the Prospect Expressway waiting for easy catches of unsuspecting speeders. Sure speeding there is dangerous too and needs to be dealt with but areas where speeding and dangerous driving take place where pedestrians and sidewalks are around should take priority and receive more enforcement effort.

i still think we should put those pop-up cardboard people in the street. kids, pets, the rest of us. it's insane. -
Windsor Terrace Alliance is hosting a 6:30PM meeting on Thur. Nov 13th at Holy Names basement [245 PPW]. If contacted at,
windsorterracealliance.org, I'm sure they will address this problem at the meeting -
Unfortunately, we won't be able to get someone from DOT at the Nov. 13, 6:30 p.m. Windsor Terrace Alliance meeting. Thanks to Bill de Blasio, we were invited to a meeting with DOT last week and expressed our serious concerns about several roads including PPSW, Bartel Pritchard, and Park Circle. They seemed interested in turning more attention to some of our local traffic problems.
We didn't have an opportunity to mention every problem area but once the DOT's attention is shifted more towards our neighborhood, there hopefully will be opportunity for this. If you want this issue raised at the meeting, please come and ask for either me (Lauren), Patti, or Phyllis prior to the meeting and we can add you to the traffic section of the agenda, so you won't have to wait till the end of the meeting. Recent WTA meetings have included reps from all the local elected officials, CB7 and police dept. so people with the power to address this problem should be there.
Also, please note that the location of the Nov. 13 meeting will still be at Holy Name but will now be at Shepherd's Hall which has more space.

Windsor Terrace Alliance -
Thanks for the update, Lauren.
Where is Shepherd's Hall? -
Sorry, Shepherd's Hall is also part of Holy Name Church. Enter the church's parking lot (between Prospect Ave. and Windsor Place) and take a right around the church building. Shepherd's Hall is straight ahead.

I would love to discuss traffic issues at the meeting but can not attend tonight due to a previous commitment. I know Bartel Pritchard Square is a serious and ongoing traffic safety issue, I hope if there is a discussion on traffic issues that speeding on Prospect Avenue and PPSW is also brought up.

Great idea , we should also have a pop up cops ,sponsored by Terrace Bagel -
will we get free bagels?
-
Bags of them on the sidewalk across the street nearly every evening...
-
i know, what's up with that???
-
Yet another aspect of this wonderful neighborhood that boggles my little outsider mind...
-
i'm sure there has to be a reason the bagels aren't being donated to city harvest.
-
Just as I'm sure there is a reason people drive like morons around Bartel Pritchard Square and speed like they are on a life or death mission while on PPSW and Prospect Avenue

i doubt that it's that kind of reason. the people at terrace are good people, they word hard, they're liked by the community. let's not disparage them. -
I was just using a bit of sarcasm. Just as there is no apparent logical reason for dumping what should be edible bagels on the street there is no apparent logical reason for the way many people drive. Nothing more in common than a lack of obvious logical explanation for either behavior.

maybe i'll ask them.
