i was just asking my daughter-in-law if any one came
foward if it was started by accident or not., she is from
calif., there is always a reason they get started., hope
it was an accident -
When we were growing up, the older Italian men used to say that as well as a saying about Sicilians. It ended with " como si brute a sicilian.

I consider them Italians but I also heard that they speak a different form of Italians where many of their words are different. Is that true??

linda, i thing it is caused by brush fires. too hot, and no rain. it is commone there, unfortunately.
my daughter lived in cali. for 3 yrs she married a marine. he was there for 5 yrs. they just came back in february. she is happy to be home.
her husband is now starting the FDNY ACADEMY in january. -
Sicily used to be a separate country.

MY HUSBAND IS GERMAN AND ITALIAN. HIS MOM WAS 100% ITALIAN AND HIS FATHER WAS 100% GERMAN. NOW, THAT'S A MIX. HE IS BLONDE W/BLUE EYES AND IS 6 FEET TALL. HE HAS A VERY DEEP VOCIE AND A VERY HEAVY BROOKLYN ACCENT. GREAT GUY:)

It became part of Italy in 1860. I think the Sicilians are mixed with Greek, etc and used to be darker in skin color, no??

JANET, ARE YOU READING THE ENCYCLOPEDIA ON ITALY? LOL YES, THE SICILAINS ARE SAID TO HAVE DARKER SKIN. NOT NECESSARILY TRUE. I HAVE NIECES AND NEPHEWS WITH NO SICILIAN IN THEM AND THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL OLIVE COLORED SKIN.

I mentioned the Greeks because before Sicily was part of Italy, they wer a country with an alliance to Malta, but they were originally colonized by Greece. So, many of the Sicilians are a little Greek !!! Interesting, no??

MY DAUGHTER MET MY SON-INLAW WHEN HE FINISHED HIS 1ST TOUR IN IRAQ. ( HE DID 2 TOURS THERE) SHE HANGS WITH HIS COUSINS, WHO LIVE HERE IN BAY RIDGE. HE CAME TO VISIT, AND THEY WERE INTRODUCED THRU THOSE COUSINS. HE IS FROM HAPPAGUE LONG ISLAND. BROOKLYN IS FOREIGN COUNTRY TO HIM. THEY NOW RENT THE APT IN THE HOUSE I OWN. I HAVE A 2 FAMILY. HOPEFULLY, HE WILL BE FDNY. -
lol Lyn. I couldn't drink that or even smell it. My brother gave me a drink of scotch when I was little and it made me so sick, if I smell it today, I get sick.

There is conflict between Italy and Sicily. Always has been. Sicily has been fighting for years, the buiding of a bridge that can easily connect it to Italy (Regia Calabria). Italy was so close you can see it, like viewing Staten Island.
I am a proud Napeltan from 4 grandparents; and guess what - Naples looks exactly like downtown Brooklyn. I can understand why my family settled on 20th St and felt comfortable.
As a child, I remember sitting out the window with my grandmother (remember - they actually let us sit in the window with minimal 'protection' for falling out). She lived on the 3rd Floor so you can see down to the docks... That's where I viewd that awful dock fire... Remember - it was
scary; my dad was a longshoreman and down there at the time (thank God, safe)..
ANYHOW...Back to Naples - it was just like being in Brooklyn (the good and the bad - to be objective about it).

When he gets into the training, just tell him to keep a low profile. I kept saying that to myself all the time to get me through it. The instructors like to single out people and constantly make an example of them as well as ridicule and make fun of them. Once they learn your name, it's over. They are firefighters who are assigned to Randall's Island and the power goes to their heads.
