lines at Tom's... call for NEW businesses on Wash Ave
Subject: lines at Tom's... call for NEW businesses on Wash Ave
Did you SEE the line at Tom's this Sat? Around the corner and down the block. Mostly white hipsters, of course. COME ON, lurking readers. This board has been mentioned in enough places that there are certainly people with $ to invest reading. Tom's is Tom's. No competition. Shane's is Shane's, fwiw. But COME ON, we need some more options over here by Washington Ave. A COFFEE place, a bagel place (like Bagels & High Tea over on Nostrand), that's what we need. On Washington, as close up to Eastern as you can get, to capitalize on the subway foot traffic, museum and gardens traffic, and all us folks who are living in apartments now worth over half a mil and can't afford to move anywhere but are damn sick of shlepping into the slope for decent coffee. i think they need more restaurants and maybe a fruit stand and a bakery on washington . only if i had a mill to throw around to open one
. -
tavern on dean is a wildly underused brunch joint, as is le gamin.
or, just get up before 11 a.m. - no line at tom's then.
-
yes, but my point here is that we need new places over here on washington. better shot at that than over by franklin, and there are plenty of hipsters between washington and franklin who'll never make it over to vandy.

So, you're saying people will go all the way over to Park Slope, which is further away and more expensive, but not Vanderbilt, which is cheaper, closer, has great food and is in the 'hood? Too bad, then. Stay hungry. Less crowded for PH residents in the know.

Anyone see that new Jamaican patty place that opened up right next to Nalani's? I've seen them open in the afternoons, haven't had a chance to try one yet, but will do later this week. -

heh, exactly. support what's here that you appreciate and like. no one is opening anything new that I know of anytime soon, especially not on washington. that stupid tea place STILL isn't open.

more patties? I hope they're damn good. -
I know this guy that is opening up a coffee/tea/anything goes type place right on Wash. Ave next to the Ginger Root Cafe. Its almost ready to open too and should be great. Have you tried the Ginger Root? The food is great there. Also, have you tried the sushi place on Wash.? Also good!

I'd like a decent butcher shop.
I can brew better coffee for cheaper at home, and I have Wifi anyway, and I always have a place to sit and charge my laptop. Oh, and at home, they don't mind when you bring your dog in with you (assuming the dog doesn't spill the better coffee into the laptop).
Tom's is worth visiting maybe a few times a year anymore. But yes, Wash Ave does need more options, and they're coming, like it or not. -

This has become a mantra for me. -
there's a tea place on wash, but it hasn't opened (BAH BAH BAH BAH dame te, cono, etc)
I have been to ginger root but mostly for sorrel or another bev item. I'm pretty lazy. -
Any more details on the place that will open next to Ginger Root? Any idea of when it is scheduled to open?
I've also noticed that there are renovations going on in the space on the corner of Prospect and Grand. There is a permit that says they are putting in a kitchen so it looks to be some sort of eating establishment. Anyone know what it might be? -
I second the Vanderbilt props. Le Gamin is good at any hour they are open and serving. The 20 buck prix fixe is an excellent bargain especially for what you get.
-
I love me some Tom's. They could open a million places, and I will still wait on line at Tom's when I can. But I do recommend Tavern on Dean. Great for Sunday brunch.

Washington is moving slowly. I think once the new buildings between St. Marks and Bergen and the one on the corner/whol block between Dean and Pacific open up things will probably move along much quicker as the residents will most likely demand some kind of higher class of service.
However, for now there is Gen (Japanese), Ginger Root is good comfortable food, Shane, Toms, there is a coffee shop opening up next door, and there are also about a dozen stores that have no one occupying them currently, which leads me to believe that things will start moving along and even probably spill into Crown Heights proper. -
and don't forget the units at the new rental complex in the former parking lot of the cathedral mansions.

Or the massive de/con-struction about to begin on St. Marks between Washington and Underhill. Washington is changing really fast, I have to admit.
-
what's going on on st. marks btwn wash and underhill?
-
Pulling down old warehouses {one recently held a very thriving business}, and putting up new buildings. I have no idea know what yet, only that demolition has begun. Go look...

New World Coffee is opening next to Ginger Root. I hear it is of the highest order. Geddit?? -
There's work being done on the corner of Grand and Prospect (they're sheetrocking right now). The people working on the place indicated that it would be a breakfast-y place where you could grab a cuppa joe, something to eat, etc... not sure on a time line.

It doesn't matter how many restaurants open up on Wash. Ave. because there will always be a line in front of Tom's. In the four years that I have lived on the block, the dependably funniest things have been the looks of dismay on the faces of the folks who show up at Tom's on Sunday. Hilarious. I don't know why people love that place so much. Sure, the service is outstanding and the friendliness of the staff is unmatched, but the food stinks, and it is overpriced. Good coffee though. Tom's is a ritual, not a necessity. For some real action, I'd recommend the $11 brunch at Sotto Voce on the corner of 7th Ave. and 4th St. Unlimited champagne, mimosas or bloody marys. Food is okay, except for the eggs Florentine, which are excellent. Stay away from the quattro fromagio fusili pasta, unless you like stinky cheese. If you get there when it opens, you will enjoy the undivided attention of the wait staff and many, many refills. A true hangover helper.

Subject: tom's coffee
does' tom serve coffee by the cup to go? i would go there just to try out the coffee if it's so good. -
Yes, Tom's has very good coffee, and if you order a small size, they'll give you one of those blue Greek to-go cups! I prefer Cafe Shane coffee though. Tom's is definitely a mellower taste.

If you are looking for a good brunch, I just tried two new things in PS:
Scottodito on Union between 6th and 7th Avenue AND
Stone Park Cafe on 5th Ave and 4th Street
The prices were really reasonable and the food was incredible. -
I'm sorry, but I think Tom's coffee is the hottest, nastiest, crazy-making Joe around. Two cups, and I'm a jittery, neurotic wreck. And I ain't no coffee wussie: I drink, sadly, a pot of dark-as-midnight Gorilla coffee every day.
-
Tom's coffee is basically hot brown water, with some added flavor of bitterness.
I've been known to bring my own stainless mug of Porto Rico's Agggie's blend with me and keep it out of sight. -

If you are not hallucinating and having heart palps by noon, it is time for another cup of coffee. -
