Summer Camp Quandry; Park Slope? Park Explorers?

darlingdear
edited November -1 in Park Slope
My son went to Park Slope Day Camp for the last two summers. The first summer seemed to be a pretty good experience for him, but this passed summer experience was quite different. I'm thinking of switching him to Park Explorers.

I'd rather have him stay in the area and I really "need" the am bus transport and 6:30pm pick-up time.

Any and all experiences with either (or others) would be MUCH appreciated.

(This may seem early in the year, but, I'm trying to decide before I miss what ever "early bird" discounts may be availble.)

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

  • Did you post on the Park Slope Parents board? That is the kind of thing that board is actually useful for.
  • Park Explorers? Yuck! All they did is hang around the park all day-how boring for kids! Both of my boys have gone and continue to go to Park Slope Day Camp-they are the best
  • Park Slope Day Camp doesn't do much more than hang out in the park all day! My kids went there several years ago and I thought it was mediocre. Their hours are good, though, and if you have an easy-going kid who doesn't need a lot of interesting activities, or any warmth at all from the bored teenage counselors, it's adequate. I thought the camp at Congregation Beth Elohim (Garfield Temple) was much, much, much better.
  • My son went on a trip a day with Park Slope Day Camp and also went swimming and skating and other things-tons of things other than hanging out in the park all day-he also took karate classes while there-they went to amusements parks and other things. Don't know what youa re talking about them hanging out in the park all day
  • sorry-just saw your post about the bored teenage counselors at PSDC-what about the counselors at garfield afterschool? half of them are sitting around and joking with each other-paying no attention whatsoever to the kids there-if that is how the camp is run-I will stay far far far away.

At PSDC, the counselors actually talked to and played with my child-many a times when picking him up I found him sitting on some counselors lap being read to or playing a game with. oh-and what does garfield temple "camp" offer?
  • sorry-a trip a week
  • I posted above as a guest (lost my password). I'm glad you've had a good experience with Park Slope Day Camp. I did not and thought Garfield was much better. I definitely did not find the PS Day Camp personnel (including the owners) to be particularly warm or sensitive. There was one incident in particular that was so disturbing to me that I was very tempted to take my kids out immediately -- not a health or safety issue, but something that reflected a serious lack of sensitivity and judgment. Anyway, this was a few years ago and perhaps things have improved. I still think there are better options in Park Slope. I've heard only good things about Kim's Kids, for example.
