We live on the upper floor of an small older building. it was terrible when we had oil heat back in the day! the people downstairs would be complaining that they were boiling hot, but we would be cold. you would have to blast the heat to high heaven for us to be even somewhat warm and by then, the people on the lower floors would be roasting. it was a major struggle. Once we switched to gas heat many years ago, things work much better. i know the bottom apartments do get a tad warmer than mine does still, but all in all, the system works a million times better than oil did!
There's no difference between properly functioning oil vs gas heat in terms of heat output/distribution. They probably repaired some other flaws in your system when they did the conversion. Or maybe your oil burner was too small (usually they are too big, though). Either way, at least you solved the problem.
As for heat in the middle of the night, I find that to be a rare occurrence, we have our building thermostat set by temperature too-but, we have the temp setting for the middle of the night down much much lower than during the rest of the day going by the theory that we don't want to waste fuel when people are in bed with their blankets and comforters and are asleep and warm to begin with.
All I know is there was a marked difference in the heat once we converted to gas. So, I thought it had to do with the gas because as far as I know when they did the conversion, there was no work done on anything else or in any of the apartments.
if your radiators are gunked up-then maybe a plumber needs to be called or you can do a simple 'bleed' of them. -
Mamacita, I know a lesbian couple that fight over the A/C and heat temp year round!
-
My apartment heat isn't on yet, but it hasn't gotten that cold yet and I am still opening windows in the evening.
My office, on the other hand, is a nightmare. The floor I'm on is right below the HVAC system so it gets the most A/C in the summer and the most Heat in the winter. Right now it is 75 and climbing. The highest it has gotten this year is 82. -
i'm calling 311 about my studio. enough. legally it has to be 68, even if it's a commercial space
-
my apartment has no heat yet and since it's a jewish holiday (like it is all of october) my landlord isn't answering. i swear by those ridiculous looking super thick and fluffy socks you see tweens wearing. they keep my whole body warm. that and hats at all times. i am typing from under 2 sweatshirts, sweats, a blanket, a hat, and fuzzy socks.
-
this holiday situation is what our work landlords are doing. it's illegal. call 311

http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/html/tenants/heat-and-hot-water.shtml
The City Housing Maintenance Code and State Multiple Dwelling Law requires building owners to provide heat and hot water to all tenants. Building owners are required to provide hot water 365 days per year at a constant minimum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Between October 1st and May 31st, a period designated as "Heat Season," building owners are also required to provide tenants with heat under the following conditions:
*Between the hours of 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit; and,
*Between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, if the temperature outside falls below 40 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. -
Still no heat. And no one picking up the phone at the landlord's office.

MINES IS COMING ON A LOT MORE OFTEN NOW. IT'S NOT JUST 4:50AM AND 7:30AM ANYMORE.

THAT THING IS STEAMING UP RIGHT NOW AND I'M BURNING UP.:-({|=
I KNOW I KNOW , I'M SO UNAPPRECIATIVE.
SOME OF YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE HEAT. GOOD LUCK WITH THE LANDLORDS. DRINK HOT TEA , SOME SOUP.WEAR SWEATERS AND SOCKS AND THOSE GLOVES WITH THE FINGER TIPS CUT OFF.....OR DRAG AROUND A BIG COMFY BLANKET AROUND THE APARTMENT WITH YOU AND TRY NOT TO KNOCK THINGS OVER WITH IT-OR MAYBE I'M THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THAT PROBLEM , WHATEVER , JUST KEEP WARM SO YOU DON'T GET SICK. -
Someone came today to fix our boiler and now we have heat, but somehow in the process they turned off the hot water and never turned it on again. So now we have heat, but no hot water. Go figure.
-
Oh no!
Turned out our thermostat was broken. Got replaced last week. -
just turned on yesterday. its an ovvveennnn but i can crack a window. better than waking up at 4am with it being 50 degrees.
-
I just came home to heat AND hot water. I feel like a big winner.

clank clank clank go our risers...

My pipes are clanking louder than ever nonstop!!!! I can't take it any more! It's making me lose what is left of my mind. It started this morning at 3am and didn't stop for what felt like hours.........I got absolutely NO SLEEP!
How can I make it stop?!?!?!!?!? -
There's a long list of things that can cause clanking pipes, most of which relate to water pooling somewhere in the steam pipes (i'm assuming you have steam heat).

Unfortunately, most of those are going to require a plumber to solve (except maybe repitching the radiators, changing the air valves, or fully opening/closing the supply valves). -
my apartment is usually hot as hell in the winter. last night the heat was normal when i went to sleep, and i had a quilt on. i woke up a few hours later drenched in sweat. this hasn't happened since last winter. i feel really bad for everyone that doesn't have heat at all, but also for anyone that is in my situation. it can be truly uncomfortable. opening some windows helps but doesn't solve the problem.

That sucks! Nothing worse than being too hot.
We still haven't turned out heat on. A couple times during the day this week and two weeks ago my roommate turned on a small space heater in one room, reasoning that electricity is cheaper than gas and it was only in one room, not all of them. At night though, between cooking and blankets, we haven't needed it. My window is still open at night too. Blissful fall air streaming in!
Wait, maybe I am cold-blooded! -

It's the other way around...gas/oil is a much cheaper form of heat than electric heat. Although I guess there's some sound logic in only heating rooms you need to heat...which is probably easier with electric. -

For years I had clanking pipes in my bedroom and a radiator that would not heat. The clanking was caused by a back pitched steam pipe that caused water to pool near a riser and a radiator. Finally, this fall, we had a plumber come in, open the ceiling and put in a new pipe. So far, no clanking and my radiator gets hot. We spent about $2000 for that work.

Heatinghelp.com is a great website. If you have any questions about steam heat, you should be able to find answers there. I highly recommend "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" by Dan Holohan. It is "the" book on steam heating, and I read it before purchasing a new boiler for my coop. If you read it and take the time to understand it, chances are you will know more about how steam heat works than the plumbing/heating person who comes to do work on your system. -
I have to bump this post because I am so damn pissed that I have no
f-ing heat. I have had it twice, but each time for less then one day...i had it yesterday for all of two hours. Yay for me. Such BS. I am so pissed i just want to scream and cry. It better be fixed today or someone is going to have to deal with my utter fury. I can't take it any longer!!!!!!
Ok sorry for the rant........ -

that's bullshit. Have you filed a complaint yet? If not, what are you waiting for? -
I will be filing one at 9:15 on the dot if I have not received a final resolution for TODAY from my rental/management company. I thought it was fixed yesterday or I wouldn't have waited. I am so fucking pissed and freezing cold that I can barely type!!!!
EDITED to add that what makes this so much worse is that I had major surgery less then two weeks ago and am on strict bedrest...talk about insult to injury!!!! So MAD!  -
littlegal, they're now two months overdue. call 311.
-
Am I totally stupid and naive to believe them when they say the plumbers will be here by 1pm today to fix everything??? Should i give them until then or file the complaint anyway?
Between the numbing cold, the pain from the surgery, and the meds I'm on, I don't trust my brain to think 'properly... Advice anyone? -
call 311. if you feel nervous about doing it, just say the word. i will call for you. whether or not they come isn't the issue, they have been withholding heat for nearly 2 months.
-
1pm is less than two hours away. I might wait until then. I would also try to personally talk to the plumbers and get the skinny on what the deal is. 2pm, I'm all over filing. I'm also asking my landlord for an electric space heater and a written agreement to deduct Con Ed from the rent until the situation is rectified.

I was hoping to evolve to the point where I could express myself solely through lolcat images discovered on the internet. Alas, I am beginning to lose interest.
Maybe.
