The official Is the heat on in your building yet?"

about time! ....you've got a reputation to uphold here!
-
I own my own house and I'm still resisting putting the heat on. I sitll manage to stay warm. I just wear a bunch of rubber hot water bottles around my neck and put on a ski hat, gloves and lots of various quilts. I then snuggle up on my beanbag with a nice cup of hot water. I think my slurpies and flip flops are done for the year. Happy winter everyone!

No way. I regretted it as soon as I posted. I will not become Daver II

Now back to the important stuff. It's well after 1pm. Did the guys show up to turn on the heat? Did ya call 311? -

Are you hibernating, who will the skinheads bother?

I have still got no heat...what I do have is numerous bullshit phone cals saying they are on the way. I am so mad I have to calm down a little before calling anyone because I will blow up and spew my rage all over the wrong people.
A new story...Something huge is broken and won't be fixed until fucking Friday. And we only found that out by calling them. I don't know if 311 even matters anymore because they are working on the problem. Anyone know if i have any recourse here? Reduced rent? Help with gas bill for using my stove to stay a little warm? Anything? -
If I were you I would get on the phone with 311 right now, if nothing else it will let your landlord know you are serious. Otherwise, the Friday deadline will become Monday which will turn into Tuesday....... You should also approach your landlord for all of the above. Reduced rent, gas bill, anything you can get. Not having heat for two months is inexcusable. Do you live in a brownstone? Because whatever the problem is shouldn't take that long to fix, even putting in a new boiler.
-
what he said, and go to tenant.net to find out what you can legally do.
this is bullshit. you are a far nicer person than i am for putting up with it for this long.
(and please don't heat your home with your oven! i have a small heater at my studio i can bring you, does anyone else have any heaters to give her???) -
I have some hot rubber bottles you can borrow. Fill them up with very hot water and put them around your neck and you'll be feeling swell.
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on looking into them tonight and going on the attack as soon as the office opens in the morning...I already left messages and will be calling again in the morning. Thanks for the help. If anyone has any other thoughts/suggestions please feel free to send them along. Thanks guys.
Potter...Just wanted to say an extra thanks for the suggestions about the space heaters...I'm ok for now, but if it gets worse I'll beg my wonderful Brooklynian community for more help! -
littlegal, please do. much as i have no problem with you burning this building down, i'd like you not to be in it when it happens.
what did 311 say? -
A really good suggestion is one of those electric blankets. They have throws and also ones for your bed. I got mine at Costco and I'm telling you they are really swell! Keeps me so toasty warm, I might go back to drinking slurpies in the winter time.

Or dying of carbon monoxide poisoning. I feel so bad for you! I know you are supposed to be on bed rest, but get in bed and keep calling 311. If your landlord was motivated, he could have had the heat fixed in a day. And 311 will at least partially motivate him. Let us know if you need anything. I am happy to help. -
That sounds nice and cozy and warm...only problem is that if you read back to my first couple of posts you'll recall that I just had major surgery and am on strict bed rest so leaving my apartment for any reason is completely out of the question...Oh well.
Anyone want to have a pity party with me!?! Don't worry--I'm joking for the most part. -
I'm sure you can order that at costco.com and have it delivered within a few days.

That really sucks. I had surgery two months ago so I can relate. Do you really not have anyone to help you out? I'm in Carroll Gardens, so not next door but if you need help, really just shout out. Slopers, anyone want to bring littlegal some hot soup? Really.

I have a fat dog who somehow becomes 3000 degrees at night. I'll even deliver!
-
Just wanted to say an extra thanks to everyone...You guys all make a girl feel so welcome even though we are technically strangers. (As a sidebar, i'll have to make it to a meet-up once I am warm(!) and get better. I would usually have my hubby to help me out, but he is a medical resident working overnight shifts at present. So he is working when I'm sleeping and sleeping when I'm up and could use the help. Shitty timimg huh.
It's so nice to know there are people out there who are still not above offering help to neighbors in need. Thanks all! -
Well then damn it! Get the fine doctor to call 311! STAT!

I'm up for that tonight. So are Oliver and Mookie. Would he/she mind? -
Not at all. Oscar would like a meal of kitty tartar before setting in for a long winter's nap.
-
I dunno - my kittehs are pretty hungry

I swear to god I am not daver in disguise. -
And no more ketteh pictures from me. I promise Daver. It's kinda just what you need to do when you have no response to a really great response.
+1 Ana -
So last night I decided it was high time to turn on the heat, but I wanted to play a little joke on my roommate. Right before she got home I put on huge ear muffs, hat, gloves, a few scarves and my coat and sat on the couch. She came in and I told her I think due to budget cuts we just won't have any heat this year and I sold her space heater to buy wine.
-
If only my no heat NIGHTMARE was just a joke, so i could taje off my gloves, etc. and not freeze in my own damn apartment! ](*,)

Call Pinchick's and see if they'll deliver a couple of space heaters (right now!)- deduct ALL costs of this from the rent. Seriously. This is ridiculous. -
Unfortunately, my LL is a lawyer and assured me that legally I don't have a leg to stand on and therefore no deductions would be considered. 311 said the same thing unless I want to go to LL/tenant court, which I definitely do not...what a JERK!!! :ncool:
All I can say is tomorrow BETTER be the day or 311 and my LL's phone will be ringing off the hook all damn day with calls from my crazy, angry ass!! -
You know, the city makes such a big deal every year ("if you don't have heat or hot water, blah blah, blah...") who the fuck is on your side with this?
Your LL sounds like a prick. Sorry. Seriously, though, I would explore the options....not like you really want to do that with what you've been through as of late.
Sucks. Want me to kick his ass? -
She'll do it, too. Whatchu don't fuck around! I'll make popcorn.

maybe you can't get deductions, but you can call 311 every day. and trust me, they will come to see if there is heat. (because we have a nightmare tenant who says she has no heat cnstantly, and the city comes constantly to check).

the LL can't stop you from calling 311
