BROOKLYNIAN BRIDE

I took the great leap last month, so I guess I shall contribute first!
Venues: We had ours at Bubbys and it was fabulous! They decorated beautifully with everything I left for them (runners, candles, etc. . .)and the food, oh the food. There was so much on the plate that you couldn't actually see the plate! My coworkers were still raving about it weeks after the wedding.
Cake: We got an ice cream cake from Emily at Trois Pommes. Not exactly traditional (she makes them, but doesn't advertise it btw) but amazing. Not one slice of cake was left.
Hair: Rudy @ Fez. I've got very curly hair and wanted it natural, half up/half down. It was beautiful, did not frizz and stayed great looking all day long. He also did my sister-in-laws updo, which was something out of a hair magazine and convinced her to get wispy bangs since it added some pizzazz, it was great!
This is getting long, so I'll stop for now. But uh, would anyone be offended if I plugged my husbands swing band? If you are interested pm me. -
Dear Chicklynian,
I'm not a Chicklynian, but perhaps you could help a brother out as well! My (lovely, talented, and beautiful) girlfriend's birthday recently passed, and after the giving of the gifts, she talked about jewelry and diamonds and whatnot. Which said presents did _not_ involve. A week later, she posted a thread about wedding etiquette and questions on a popular local internet bulletin board. She recently took me and my family out to meet her parents, and she has plans for me to meet more of her family soon over the holidays.
My question is, would a subscription to a cooking magazine be a good Christmas present? -

Not if you want to get laid anytime after Christmas

WYW the master of subtlety. I know an excellent professional wedding photographer for you, just holla once Daver gets the nerve to pop ye 'ol question. =D> :flower:

I get to be flower girl!

Oh mi gawd, everybody! Relax.....
This thread (seriously) provides a nook for the bridal chicks of Brooklynian.
Whether or not I may have weddings on the brain (for reasons that Dear BF is well aware), the idea for Brooklynian Bride is purely for the brides in Brooklyn. I've noticed a lot of wedding related threads on site and decided to create a main thread, ala idiebride.com. I'm doing it for them, the dolls of Chicklynian, who I love dearly. I am a selfless promoter of good bridal tidings!
So on that note:
Congrats sjknoll! Sounds like it was a really great day. -
As someone who has never had any warm fuzzies about a wedding (well, maybe about a boozy party on a beach, but none of the traditional stuff) I can't look away from these threads.
I like the links like the one to the cool dress shops and about delicious cakes, and threads that aren't all about bashing.
-
As an anti-wedding-industry bride, I am pro-Bridelynian (?) thread....I like www.offbreatbride.com, but its resources are a bit West Coast-centric (I think the blogger is from Seattle...)
Alleged ulteriour motives on the part of Whatchuwant notwithstanding....
So....cakes: LadyBird's Brooklyn Blackout? -
Thanks Whatchuwant! It's funny now that I'm married, I still can't pull myself away from wedding related sites (although it's not as bad as before). But I'm happy to share my info and really some of the recommendations that come up will be good for non-wedding related parties as well.

Pie? Where? :cyclopsani: -
For me, the hardest part will probably be picking a band. I haven't started looking yet, but I'm already dreading it. I seriously doubt it'll be easy finding a band that knows both the music that is more reception-proper, and yet still fit in a handful of numbers that better suit our music tastes (New Pornographers, Belle & Sebastian, etc.). Now if any of you know of any bands with that wide of a repertoire, please let me know.
And even if they don't play my kind of music, I'm definitely open to suggestions (no big band, swing, or jazz, please).
Thanks,
-anthony -

R & B! Who doesn't love them a little Earth, Wind, and Fire, Aretha Franklin, and Jackson Five (I could go on and on...) on their wedding day...

We found a great band, by accident, at a concert at the BPL. I would recommend them, but they're swing. Maybe you could start looking at listings and when you hear a band that you like, ask if they play weddings (I was seriously surprised that we could get the band that we did).
And even if they don't play my kind of music, I'm definitely open to suggestions (no big band, swing, or jazz, please).

The mention of this mysterious "Brooklyn Blackout" cake at Ladybird was haunting me, so today I stopped by Ladybird for my first time. I got said flavor in cupcake form, the lemon cloud cupcake, and a chocolate pepper cookie.
My mom is a great baker and cakes from your average bake shop usually just seem kind of "eh" to me. The cookies were a great crunchy choco snack and the blackout is amazing! All I can say is thank god I didn't get a whole cake or my tummy would be aching now. Amazing.
Am saving the lemon for later, but I have high hopes for it. Everything in the cabinet looked great there. -
there is so much caffeine in that blackout cake you'll be up all night. i know this from experience. still, i want pie
(on an aside, as i am not getting married but love food and pie, i always thought that if i get married i want two things at the wedding: unlimited shrimp. and pie. that's actually what my mom is giving me for a b'day dinner. nothing fancy, just shrimp and pie) -

Have you thought about a DJ?
I was married quite some time ago but it was hard to combine all the styles of music we needed at my wedding we went with a DJ and were really happy. Also, I went to a weddings recently where the DJ's set up a screen where they had a slideshow of pictures of the bride and groom growing up, special family members, etc.
Congratulations -
Yeah, I've thought of getting a DJ, or of even programming in the music myself, but The Fiance wants a band. So...

The lemon cloud will not disappoint! There is usually nothing wrong with me that the lemon cloud cannot fix.

Blackout is my boyfriend's (fiance, now, I guess) favorite, but we're actually entertaining the thought of getting multiple cakes. Because I am a cake piglet. -
Yes the lemon was also amazing. The dog (bad sneaky dog!) also thought both flavors were delicious.
I'll definitely go back there when we want a treat. I will consider no others! -
Red velvet literally commands the way I move on this planet. I need to regularly align myself with RV cake on a regular basis.

I find it worth it because I don't have to worry about whether or not they are going to ruin a new item of clothing I've just bought (paying for peace of mind, too, I guess). If you're going to scrimp shouldn't it be on a wedding expense other than your wedding dress?

Even more beautiful then I could have imagined!!!!!

Oh all this is so very exciting to me!
I'm addicted to indiebride.com and just started checking out offbeat bride,,, we're trying to keep things as 'local' as possible.. so this thread is terrific!
We're getting married mid April at the Picnic House (where it's $750 off from usual prices now through April!)... using the FABULOUS Opalia Flowers (Ask to speak with Phoebe) and the unbelievably awesome DJ DJGAZA (who is SO professional, reliable and all around amazing... and a Park Sloper!) The photographer is Joshua Zuckerman ( www.jzweddings.com ) and, being a photographer myself, this was the hardest 'vendor' to find... but after about 2 months and 200 wedding websites later, i found him and we're soooo excited about it!
I got my dress on craigslist for $175 (a $2100 Henry Roth in need of a cleaning and alterations) and am still seeking a veil. Got a wee little white shrug on ebay for $28 and shoes from fluevog for $65!
We're having world wide events ltd do the catering and so far everything about them has been incredible. I'm a vegetarian and didn't want there to be any animals killed for our 'day' but, as i eat fish occaisionally (they say it's good for the skin ,,, so sue me,) we'll have some fish mixed in with some vegan and vegetarian stuff.
Cupcakes will come from one of our all time fave restaurants SNICE!
We're using a tri-fold invitation from Lion In The Sun with a tear out postcard for rsvps (saving tons of paper and having everything be on one piece of paper rather than 12.)
Oh and we're getting our ketubah done by http://www.newketubah.com and i've been wanting to share them with anyone i possibly could because they are so great! Modern, clean and not 'too Jewish' (oooh someone is going to have a field day with that one)... They are handcrafted and just gorgeous. Simple and beautiful.
As you can see we're well on our way after having done TONS of research...
Hmmm.... what else... still seeking someone for wedding dress/gown alterations and cleanings... any recs folks??? -
