it's my first year as a coop member, and i'd like to get my (small-ish) thanksgiving turkey there. i gather from the newsletter that you don't order the turkey in advance. on the one hand, i'm guessing it's a bad idea to wait until wednesday night to go buy one, but on the other hand, i'd like to minimize the amount of time i have to store the beast.

anyone have experience on how quickly the suckers sell out?

    I haven't actually bought a turkey at the coop, so I don't have personal experience. But this was what they said on their blog a few weeks back:

    "Turkeys will start being delivered the Friday before Thanksgiving. Turkeys delivered the week of Thanksgiving are not going to be fresher; they are all butchered at least a week in advance."

    From past experience, the small ones go first - but even that varies from year to year depending on how many small ones the purveyors supply.
    Some turkeys are in already (kosher organic? I forget now), but I don't think the heritage birds are there yet. Whatcha looking for?

    presumably a turkey post will appear sometime soon . . . or not. They are off the hook busy over there at the moment. I'm sticking to super express 3 items when possible.

    They currently have 3 kinds of turkeys already in. All shapes and sizes. I spoke to the guy there who was in charge of ordering them, and he advised to get my turkey by at least the weekend, unless I was hoping to get a heritage bird, which wont be in till next week. (At $3.99 per pound, they are an excellent deal compared to elsewhere, but still pricey.)

    Let's hope they are not butchered during a Sarah Palin interview like in this video clip. Is what the guy is doing in the background humane? It looks quick, but still makes me not want turkey for Thanksgiving.

    My grandfather worked in a chicken slaughterhouse in the late 40s and, because of the experience, hasn't eaten chicken since. Curiously, he does eat turkey.

    That's why I think the Palin clip is so weird. She wants to call the event "fun" but no one who worked in agriculture would look at it that way. A super conservative friend told me she thinks Palin was poking fun at animal rights activists, and trying to bond with people who are tired of the activism. But to me this even further distances Palin from her supposed working class roots.

    Getting somewhat back on topic, other than the co-op, does anyone have any recommendations as to where to grab a turkey in PS for this week?

    Get Fresh, on 5th Ave and 6th Street, has pre-brined, fresh birds. I believe they may be heritage birds, so I would expect them to be pricey.

    Thanks for the tip on Get Fresh, but it's too late to order turkeys from there. Anyone else have any ideas before I give up and head to the Key Food for a Butterball?

    Have you checked Union Market? Fairway? How about placing a last minute order at Fresh Direct? I always got my fresh birds there, for the past 5 years, but this year I joined the Coop.

    Don't buy Butterball - it's filled with chemicals. If you want a regular bird (not heritage); you can get Shady Brook Farm, or an Empire Kosher turkey (one of the chefs on the food network always uses a kosher bird). I also just heard that Trader Joe's has them already brined. As far asShadyBrook or Empire - any supermarket will have them...and the Key Food on 5th has Heritage. But I would get one soon if you haven't already...the smaller birds go quickly.

    I'll look for a Shady Brook or an Empire. I just called TJ's, and both the Brooklyn and 14th St. locations are out of turkeys. Maybe I'll just stay at home and drink Wild Turkey. It's close enough, right?
