Looking for Old Friends
I now live in Italy but, miss the old days when we were all in the streets playing ball, hide and seek, Man Hunt, Ringo-Levio, War, Slap Ball, Stick Ball, Two Hand Touch, Kings, etc. and just hanging out on the stoop.
I miss my friends.

What years are you talking about? What was his name? At the time there was Jimmy's candy store which then was bought by the Bianchi's, there was Oscar's grocery store, a Protestant church between E3rd St. & E4th St.. My father once ran the grocery store on E 2nd & Vanderbilts which is no longer a grocery store. In fact, my grandfather used to own the store, the appartment on top of it, and the 3 garages on Vanderbiltst attached to the appartment house. This appartment has a huge wall on its side that many of us would play handball off of and get yelled at.
I'm looking for Philip Columbia, Allan Tupper, Brian Lavender, the Fazio's, Diane Cicali, the LaMia's, and many more. -
His name was Jerry but the store was called Steffy's.
I don't have the exact dates but I think it was opened in 1977. He closed it in the early 80s to pursue another career. -
Well, I guess the old neighborhood is dead and gone. I remember some time ago when I returned Ulmer's bar also disappeared. Anyone remember that bar on the corner of East 2nd & Vanderbilt St.?

In what year did Ulmers close. Was Willy still the bartender when you went? -
I never drank at the bar , i would pick up a couple of containers for myself and a neighbor.
I don't know when it closed as i moved to sunset park and eventually found my way back to windsor terrace.
I was disappointed when i passed by and discovered it was closed,
do you remember the name of the butcher on vanderbilt and East 4th. -
Osacar was his name.

I lived on vanderbilt st between 18th st and prospect ave from 1964 to 1974, on the other side of the expressway from you, right across the street from what use to be the american legion, I have been very nostalgic lately, as I have not been back to brooklyn since then, now living in virginia. We also played stick ball, man hunt, loved playing kings and we played red light green light, and war. What great memories I have. I actually went to IHM school which was over by you, just go down 3rd to fort hamilton parkway and I went to that school. The friends I knew were donna white, nicholas fucci, diane stella, johnnie russo, and others I cant remember their last names, like dee-dee, michael. Friends of my parents were vito spano, al caccamo, jimmy & margie slattery, big jim, mr quigley, mr d'amico, mostly members of the american legion. I long to go back and visit vanderbilt street ! I am trying to plan a trip soon. Some research showed me the man who owned the house that we rented still owns that house. I'd love to go back in and see what it looks like today ! Cant wait to come home to brooklyn, even though you leave, somehow brooklyn is always your home and stays in your heart forever !

Mr. Quigley rings a bell. Did you know Wayne Hixon or was it Dixon. His mother used to run the East Fifth Street Park recreation? Michael Mosca by chance? My name is Vinnie and I used to date a girl name Janet on your "side of the bridge." I can't remember her last name but I know it was Italian.
I remember the American legion and even went to a dance there once. Also, I used to hand out at the bar that was closest to the subway entrance. The subway entrance that used to have a small funeral home right behind it. That is the building my friend Wayne live next door to. I bet we have a few common friend. -
I do remember a girl, in her late teens at the time, who dated a boy from the other side of the expressway, I dont remember her name, but she had long, straight dark brown hair, very pretty, maybe italian, I want to say her name was vickie, but I'm probably wrong. I just remembered she always wore (what was to me as little girl) sky high heels, because she said her boyfriend liked her in them, she even tried to wear them in the snow once ! She didn't live on our block, but just a block or two from us. I dont recognize wayne, and the michael that lived on our block, his father was a policeman. If you were hanging out at the bar you were more closer in age to my sisters, Linda and Donna, Donna's boyfriend Mark, and there friends, Josephine, and Colleen, or Billy and Thomas Slattery. My father was a member of the american legion, so we were there almost daily, my dad would work and me and brother would play. I cant remember Mr Quigley's first name, he also belonged to the american legion. Mr D'amico I believe owned several of the houses on vanderbilt street and one on Reeves Place, just a block away. If you went to a dance at the american legion, chances are good that my father was there and me a my brother helped set up the tables and chairs.
