Knit in the New Year!
Hello Yarn People,
Ooops. Sorry about that earlier post. My multi-tasking days are over.
Propsect Heighters bring out your wool in 2006 and make something for Valetines Day. Nothing spells lovin' like a red hat. I've been asked by Craft Yarn Council if any of our groups want to make granny squares for the Afghans for Afghanistan. YES, it's real, and they have a web site.
http://www.afghansforafghans.org/
Knit at Prospect Perk: 183 Sterling Place (718) 398 2760
Every Wednesday evening from 7:00 - 9:30pm. A cozy little coffee shop near Grand Army Plaza. Have a Chai Tea.
Knit at Maha's: 69 sixth Avenue. (718) 789-0510
Every Thursday evening from 7:00 - 9:30pm.
The Men's Forum? Not strictly, but this group is more guy-friendly. Stitch, bitch, nosh, try the home made chicken soup with zatar bread!
Knit In at Freddy's: 485 Dean Street (718) 622-7035
Saturday, January 7, 2006
http://www.freddysbackroom.com
5:00 - 8:00 The Knit In: Stitch, bitch, unwind. Swift and ball winder are always on available. Seriously, please don't bring the children, they freak-out the regulars. Stick around for Catalyst Art Opening and The Cavemen Go Quartet after they kick us out!
Happy New Year,
That Yarn Guy

I think I'm going to come on Saturday and use your wool-winder again. I have a project that I pretty much deep-sixed by thinking that I could just carefully pull the yarn from the skein as I knitted; that worked okay until the cat dragged it under the coffee table for a good gnaw. Then it just got more and more tangled until I tried to cut the snarl out, which reduced the yarn to many too-short snippets. Luckily it only cost $3 in the first place.
Anyhoo, I have another ball of yarn in a different color so I can try a different lace pattern with that yarn. This time I have the needles so I can stick around and knit a while after winding. -

EmilyM, I'll be Swift/ball winder ready. What did people do before the invention of the swift? Did cave-knitters string yarn from antelope horns? Luckily they didn't have domestic cats at that time.
I bought some from the wool lady at the farmers market on impulse. I have no idea what do with it yet. It's a bit stiff, does this soften with each washing? -
I may come by, too. I have a baby hat and blanket that need to be completed by mid-March, but my hit-or-miss knitting schedule is conspiring against me. that and I picked two patterns that involve 1) keeping track of stitches and 2) seed stitch. I need to remember that I only like knitting.

Let me guess: are you making the Big Bad Baby Blanket from the first Stitch 'n' Bitch book? I made that when I was very new to knitting. Had to restart it over and over again because I kept getting off by one stitch and messing up the seed stitch border. It took me forever, but by the time I finished it I definitely knew how to tell knit stitches from purl stitches (hence keeping me from messing up the seed stitch ever again) and how to redo a stitch several rows back by dropping the stitches above it. -

no ... but it sounds similar. and my friend is going to just have to deal with a fucked up blanket. i'm not especially talented with the knitting. -
Sorry to miss it. That Yarn Guy - if you want any yarn from Venice let me know. I'm hoping to find a yarn store on Saturday - it should be much lighter than the usally glass-made goods I usually bring home in my suitcase. Although I still plan on splurging on a good bottle of Grappa, but that is for my other hobby.

KW hell yeah, PLEASE get me enough to make a watchman's cap. Maybe 90 yards? The whole metric thing eludes me. I guess make it worsted weight (again, metrics I don't know), If they have Napels Yellow in Venice that might be cool... or maybe it's confusing.
How's this for yarn suggestions:
1) the most popular color in a weight that people like
2) the hip new stuff that all the kids are wearing
3) their version of orange
4) someting your parents won't understand (soy-merino?)
5) interesting novelty stuff. I already have the stainless steel yarn from Habu that makes alarms go off in airports. Haunting.
*Optional: an interesting knitting tool (i.e. a helper monkey with skills)
Cheers KW,
That Yarn Guy -
Subject: Freddy's Update
Hey Folks,
That Yarn guy will be a bit late for the Knit In at Freddy's, at around 5:30 but the Swift and Ballwinder wil be left with the bartender, Brent (that guy that looks like young Bob Dylan).
Also the Knit In will be moved to Sunday at about the same time (will check with Freddy's). Sunday openned up so I seized the day. Sunday seemed to work better than Saturday for most people. Also it runs into the Pub Quiz which starts at 9:00-ish so we have more time. We might run into the occasional D and D group if they can't find a dark basement to play in. -
Thanks for the heads-up, I'll be sure to come after 5:30. And yeah, Sunday is probably a better day for people in general.

*confused*
are we knitting on Sunday at 5:30 or Saturday at 5:30 with an option to knit more on Sunday? :?: -
I was assuming that it was Saturday this time but Sunday in the future. But yeah, confusing. :?
-
please clarify, yarn guy. you're our only hope!

Subject: Blame it on the Meds!
Sorry sorry sorry folks, I have to stop taking Robitussin when I'm posting. It's Betty-Ford-chic and honey flavored.
Let me clarify, We are meeting this Saturday, tomorrow at Freddy's, swift, winder et all. I'll be late 5:30ish, but I'll leave stuff with Brent for you. Just bring your stuff along.
In February until the it gets too warm, Knit In day would be the first Sunday of the month. I have to get a start time from Don at Fredy's before I confimr it officially. I was thinking of starting books on tape for Feb. Is that totally lame? suggestions?
Hey check this out. One crafty fella got his name in the Street.com as yarn activist.
http://www.thestreet.com/funds/goodlife/10259437.html
Hey Botanic, are you coming to this? you can show off your new italian rib scarf with the crab stitch edging. -
Well, phooey. I should have checked this thread again yesterday, because I managed to get the Sunday thing stuck in my head and ended up missing it thinking it was happening today despite all the clarification. Did a lot of folks show up? I'm all for a Sunday group at Freddy's, so I hope it ends up working out schedule-wise next month!
Re: the audiobook idea: to be honest, I'm not crazy about the idea because it seems like it would hinder conversation, and I think it would prove difficult to focus well enough on an audiobook to really get much out of it in a group setting anyway. -
apollonia666.
Yeah sorry for the mix up sweetie. We actually also got a bit double booked with the art opening that evening so we were knitting around people hanging a show. Starting in February the Knit In at Freddy's will be on the first Sunday. It wil be more convenient for everyone.
They say the arts are the first to go, I say it's the crafts. Maybe I'll see you at Maha's before then. Ixnay on the ooksbay on apestay.
BTW Zenobia Baily, a well known crochet artist has an installation at on the fifth floor of the Brooklyn Museum. She has crocheted the most incredible yurt. It's about 8' X 4' X 4'. It floats above a 10' in daimeter sun rug. Truly amazing. -

not sure about the changing of stiffness but check out the "2nds" basket that is somethings just weird colored "1sts" or balls that have a break or 2 in them which to me, atleast, is not the end of the world for 2/3 the price! -
for you knitters...or maybe it's for the non-knitters to enjoy a teeney sweater made for a hood ornament.
this should be my new avatar, but I'm retarded about changing avatars

Pitu,
Nice hood ornament cozy. Dry clean only or can it make it through the car wash?
Ms. Baily rocks! I wonder where else we can see her work? Did you get a chance to see the photography of Edward Brutinsky on the fifth floor? The installation is up only until teh 15th of Jan. -

I was there to see the ancient tile work, for a friend out of state . . . who I taught to knit a million years ago so he could make a sweater out of some yarn he had made. Not that I knit, cause I don't . . . weird.
Anyway, I love the Brooklyn Museum. -
