A few years back a friend of mines calls me. he goes um "some dude is taking my mail. what should i do." and i told him "go up to the fucker and get your mail back." he goes "he is really a big guy." i said to him just threaten to call the cops on him and get mail back and than call the cops on him for real. he went and got his mail back but still very sheepish. and well he never called the cops.

Thanks qtrain - I knew I like ya better than the B or DThe score does not count “consumer-initiated†inquiries – requests you have made for your credit report, in order to check it. It also does not count “promotional inquiries†– requests made by lenders in order to make you a “pre-approved†credit offer – or “administrative inquiries†– requests made by lenders to review your account with them. Requests that are marked as coming from employers are not counted either.

Yea, this guy was going through mail in the alley on Underhill between Lincoln and St. Johns (where a couple of buildings throw their trash). Definitely not looking for stuff to sell (well, maybe he is selling C/C numbers..).
I saw him last summer. -

my friends have gotten "busted" before by the cops for going through trash, so whether or not it is legal.. call the cops!!
I left my house today and there was a guy- fitting the description- tall-thin, but muscular build, goatee, hat- wool bomber jacket with the name Henry on it, big black duffel bag- going through our building's garbage.
I was intimidated, but I asked him what he was doing (I had to ask a couple of times) He finally said he was looking for stuff to sell- I told him there was nothing in there for him and to stop- he kept going and I just stood there waiting for him to finish- he didn't take anything while I was there, but be really careful. I wasn't sure if I should or could call the cops because it is garbage and technically, not our property (But then, if that's the case- how come we get fines and tickets).
So I wasn't sure what to do.
Any advice, if I see him again?
thanks, -
hey ph'ers, just wanted to thank everyone for all of the advice. i think i've been lucky so far in that only 2 credit cards and one bank account were opened in my name (to date) and i am not liable for these, according to the creditors.
looks like it's time for me to splurge on a shredder, regardless, if this type of thing is so widespread. the 'bring your documents to work' for shredding idea, tho quite appealing, may not be a good option for one who works in east new york, where cops would never think twice about stopping a garbologist, unless they (the cops) had unsavory motives. -
Hi all. I'll admit, I've been lurking for awhile now. Please forgive me. How else would I get the latest PH news and gossip?
Anyhoo, I haven't seen the PHIT yet, but wanted to report that it appears that the Gaffler is back. My husband ran into him about 2 weeks ago. Same old "mother had a stroke and my car broke down on the way to the hospital and by the way, would you like tickets to the latest trendy musical artist?" story. I guess my husband told him he didn't have a job and the gaffler became disinterested real quick-like.
Anyone else seen him? Keep your camera phones handy, folks.... -

Well, if they're shredded well and all jumbled up with unrelated stuff, like documents in an office, it's doubtful one of these guys could piece them all together even if he tried, and even more doubtful that he'd go to that much effort.
Also, my office has a contract with a document destroying company. We have these locked drop boxes in our office. A security-screened employee of the document destruction company comes around once a week to shred them all on site, and then the shredded documents are disposed elsewhere. A lot of financial and law firms use these services because they're one of the most secure means of destroying papers.
Nonetheless, I'm so paranoid about it that I rip everything up a bit and put the pieces in two separate shred boxes -- on different days -- to make it even more difficult. All of which is laughable when you consider the thin likelihood of anyone getting credit out of my checkered history! -
so i came home yesterday and the key did not work in my mailbox & i had to get the super to replace it for me. he is also the super for a building a couple doors down and said that some one in the other building was using wire to break into mailboxes... related? not sure... annoying for sure!!

The differences between reports are usually going to be because of smaller lenders (neighborhood credit unions, etc). Not only does it costs money to access a credit report from the bureaus, it also costs money to report a credit line history to the bureaus. It's a typical for smaller lenders to decrease overhead by only reporting to one bureau instead of all three.
I did this recently and, at least for mine, there were some differences between the reports. -
Thanks for the heads up (I'm finally going to invest in that damned shredder) and thanks a lot for the info on the free credit reports (I knew you could do it but didn't know how) - I just e-mailed it to friends and family too.

FYI: you can pick up a strip-cut shredder and a sharpie at Target for less than $20.

If you're going to buy a shredder, spend the extra $10 and get a crosscut. -
The Gaffler was really tall (where did that name come from?). My husband's 6'2", and this guy was slightly taller. Mayonegg, did your husband mention that he was tall?
-
yes, he says "a little taller than 6 feet"
