ok, so I have a question about delivery tipping

why are some of you thinking he is taking anything out on the delivery guy?

He said should the tip stay the same or should he give more.

IMO, the tip stays the same. It's the same work, the same weight and the same distance to yoru place. His job didnt change, just the price of the items.

We don't pay close attention to such things. We spend our free time looking for someone who we can feel morally superior to.

The question is: Why did the restaurant raise their prices? Just because they're greedy or perhaps their costs went up. Does it occur to you that maybe the delivery guy's cost of living might also go up? If you're paying more for your food , maybe he has to pay more for his. Why do people want to raise the minimum wage, all those poor smucks are doing the same work? The audacity!

As native Americans we have the right to enjoy General Tso's Chicken, a white pizza, or even TWO white pizzas delivered to our door, anytime, under any conditions... Also, there seems to be some implication above that there my be "un-Americans" delivering food to our doors. Personally, I like mexicans to deliver my tacos and such, straight asians to bring me rice, and when I order pizza I expect none other than Super Mario (or Luigi on a busy night) himself to roll in with pockets full of change... I'll tip for that.

Anyway, this is a really good thread. It's an intricate debate/discussion and I'm glad to see some of our best and brightest are shedding light on the issue of time, distance, space, climate considerations, and sheer volume of food. One day we will solve this pressing issue.

We're suppose to presume that the restaurant is somehow screwing you by increasing prices "ALOT"? Most restaurants hesitate to increase prices for obvious reasons and often make a sudden jump in order to catch up. I submit that you have no idea why they are increasing their prices "ALOT". If you think these people are such thieves why do you continue to get food from them? To pass summary judgment on the delivery guy is petty and should guarantee a little extra surprise in your next takeout.

...hence they are unlikely to screw their customers with price increases that aren't necessary. By all means, stop ordering take out if you can't afford the price of food AND a decent tip for the delivery guy.

Why have just the delivery guy suffer in this downturn, when you can have the resturant suffer too!? ...only the best (cheapest?) places will survive this down turn.

there's a subtly self-acknowledged pat on the back going here, i.e.: let's write publicly in a forum that I'm better than people to frame a discussion on how much to tip said people. E.g., "Should I feel guilty for ordering food from a block away and not tipping the guy," translating to, "Hey everyone, I'm kinda sorta better than people. Won't you acknowledge this, and in turn acknowledge it in yourself, by engaging in a discussion on the finer points of food delivery?"
