Because they're the singlehandedly best stalker (in a good way) friendly things ever..*cough* or so I've been told.
Anyhoo, just because you're a member doesn't mean you have to do anything with it. It can be fun to simply have around. And you can join the PH group. -
I never connect with anyone though. I mean, everyone I 'connect' with, I already have a rl email or snail mail addy. the rest is so lame. and I'm too old for dating off these sites. the boys think I'm retarded.

Oh pish. Connecting is overrated. Friendster was three years ago and the only people you'll meet now are old HS/college people. Mysoace is only good if you want a half-naked pervert or need to know when your new fave band is playing. But the bulletins on both are good for friend group event announcements that you can go to in real life and theoretically "connect"..if you must. But sadly, the annoying to cool prospect ratio is about the same as throwing a rock up in the air in a crowded place or something

Daily Heights is the new Socially Semantic Web. In Ajax. 2.0. Tagging. Folksonomy. Thingy.
Did I say 2.0? I meant 3.0. -

Heh. Nah, I think you just need to watch more MTV for them. -

On the pro side, I know a couple who met on Friendster and are now very happily living together.
On the con side, recently I got an email from a former friend--now someone I can't stand-- who had gotten an email from friendster purportedly on my behalf, which basically was inviting her to join. I was really annoyed and contacted friendster. Apparently I may have emailed her an invitation FOUR YEARS AGO when we were still friends, and friendster periodically re-emails those people, even after all this time. I've pretty much severed ties with this person, but the friendster email made it looked like I was trying to reconnect. Awk-ward! -

Did I already mention that, in an effort to make myself findable, I gave Friendster my [email protected] address, and it is now utterly unusable because overrun with viagra and livestock-pr0n spam? Because that was pretty unforgiveable.

I have one of those addresses as well and used on Friendster for a short time. I get some of that spam but it's not all that frequent. I have since switched to Gmail though. -
Oh, I should say that it's a forwarder, not a POP address. Still, would have been nice to use on resumes and all.
-
If you use yahoo mail, the address guard feature lets you make disposable e-mail accounts to avoid that problem. I use a different one for every site I go on.
-
Right, but no one would know to look for me by an address like that, whereas anyone who went to college with me would be able to find me by my alumni address. Bear in mind that my maiden surname is exceedingly common--now it's not really a problem to make myself findable because my surname is so uncommon.

Right, so if you had given friendster your disposable address, you could have protected the "real" alumni address. -

So is mine, and I used to use it on resumes as well but it was annoying long to spell out for other uses. -
Am I missing something? The idea was that people would find me on Friendster by searching for my email address because my name returned so many people who aren't me. If I used a different address, that wouldn't have worked. How would anyone have known to look for me as [email protected]?

but your disposable e-mail address can also have your real name, such as:
Emily[redacted][email protected]
or
Emily[redacted][email protected] -
Who's calling who redacted?
Okay, I see your point. I guess I would have done something like that had I known that Friendster was going to eff everything up. As it was, I preferred using the address that other alumni could know just from knowing my name and when I graduated. -
i didnt know that myspace was bought... maybe thats why they are attacking their old leads.
some tech email wrote: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., which until recently had a wobbly Internet presence, now testifies to the hugeness of the online opportunity. Speaking at a Citigroup media conference in Phoenix on Monday, Murdoch said the company will continue to build its Web side, following last year's purchases of IGN Entertainment for $650 million and MySpace.com for $580 million. "The Internet is the ultimate provider of choice," said Murdoch. Murdoch says that some day soon, everyone will have access to a computer and the Internet, and that this universal broadband access will only accelerate trends recently warming the likes of Google and Yahoo! and cooling print- heavy outfits like New York Times.
