He said should the tip stay the same or should he give more.

IMO, the tip stays the same. It's the same work, the same weight and the same distance to yoru place. His job didnt change, just the price of the items.
The question is: Why did the restaurant raise their prices? Just because they're greedy or perhaps their costs went up. Does it occur to you that maybe the delivery guy's cost of living might also go up? If you're paying more for your food , maybe he has to pay more for his. Why do people want to raise the minimum wage, all those poor smucks are doing the same work? The audacity!

Why should I be a hero and give the delivery person a huge tip because the restaurant owner thinks delivery people are slaves? Let the restaurant owners pay appropriate wages.

Since I am not comfortable supporting a restaurant employment system that might be underpaying its delivery people, maybe I should stop eating food from restaurants unless any restaurants can prove that all employees are paid enough to survive. I'm serious. If anyone can provide a list of restaurants that pay all staff "good" wages, I will only eat at those restaurants.

The more I think about it, I'm disturbed that I most likely have supported restaurants that don't pay delivery people enough to buy their own food.

  • Big fan of the "if you fly I'll buy" beer run concept! I always thought that was ulimately fair. If I am going to be too lazy to go get it myself, I am going to show my appreciation for the guy legging it over to my place with a pizza.

One bag of food delivered promptly = $5 +/- change. (Example: $17.75 gets $23; $45.10 gets $50.00). Bad weather bonus is usually +$2.00. Pretty easy to walk away from my door with $7.00 in a snow storm if the food is hot and arrived fast.

  • but what about the delivery people who suck?

    1.
there's one restaurant in my nabe with brick oven pizza i love. that pizza used to cost @$10. delivery guys comes and i ask how much--presbyopia, and i don't always have the glasses on me--and the kid enthusiastically says $15. i may not have my glasses on, but i am not stupid. i asked why it was so much and he couldn't converse because he didn't speak english.

(i will stop the story here and say that i have no problem with people who don't speak english, i'm not going to even go there in regard to this thread. though sometimes the language barrier is a problem here because you're doing a transaction with someone whom you can't have a conversation with. but, using it as a way to get more $$? not okay. )

i got my glasses, saw it was the @10, and he got two bucks.

    2.
i have a next door neighbor with a baby who's hard to get to sleep and gets awakened by, say, the loud buzzer. i had to stop ordering from one restaurant because for whatever reason the delivery guy rang their bell and not mine. always. i'd always tell the restaurant when i called, but i don't know if they got the message to the delivery guy--though i don't think they tried. and i spoke with him a zillion times--as did aforementioned neighbor, whose voice got louder each time they came. accidentally or on purpose, this guy wasn't going to get a good tip from me after the second time this happened.

and don't even start with me about the guys who leave dozens of menus in from of everyone's door. even when you ask them not to. repeatedly.

Some delivery people owe customers tips for cleaning up unwanted menu garbage. If a menu litter bug/delivery person delivers me a $10 pizza, I will pay $8 and take a $2 tip.

Customers who clearly articulate which door bell to ring also have the right to charge a Wrong Door Bell Fee of $5.

So for those of you who are victims of delivery people who wake your neighbor's kids and throw unwanted menus on your floor, your next $10 pizza could cost you as little as $3.
    ($10 pizza price - $2 menu litter fee - $5 Wrong Door Bell Fee = $3)

  • What about the obnoxious delivery people who ring EVERY buzzer in your building so they can get in and A) bang on your door directly or B ) throw menus all over the place? I rarely order in - I usually walk over myself but this has happens a lot when my neighbors order. And our buzzers are super loud. I can hear every buzzer in the place.
