  • why would someone attack you for such a question? actually, being newly single myself, i wonder the same thing. most of the people on the board here seem to be hitched or significantly othered. i guess the usual places like soda, freddy's, half are the most likely options. if you find out, let me know ;)
  • I smell a hook up.... 8)
  • Yeah, tk, let me know too! Especially if you run into the under 25s while you're at it...
  • Although I love Freddy's lots, I think you may do better by getting involved in an activity that you enjoy instead of just hanging at bars. If you like movies, consider joining the American Museum of the Moving Image. Once you're in, they have free events occasionally that are open only to members, and not just at the museum itself in Queens. If you like art, consider MoMa or a group with art to your liking. If you run, New York Road Runners. Membership in these types of organizations is not that expensive, especially compared to a night on the town.

If you are a churchgoer, there's church. If you speak a foreign language, get into a conversational French/Spanish/whatever group. If you have a child and are single(I don't, for those wondering), a children's book reading might be a good idea. Prospect Park has a lot of events listed on its site, some of which draw groups of like-minded people. When it turns cold, there's an ice skating rink there if you like to do that. They may have courses you could take where you could meet people. You get the idea.

I have had miserable luck with myspace and friendster. I think most people just go there to play Hottie Pokemon.
  • Two suggestions:

1)pick up ultimate frisbee in the park. Full of young early-to-mid 20s. I played in a NYSSC league in prospect park this spring, and had I been single, it would have been pretty easy to meet someone.

2)Honestly - try the online personals. When I moved to NY 1.5 years ago I was single and didn't know anyone. I'm still very good friends with two guys I met on dates and also met my current boyfriend that way. I reccomend Spring Street Personals for having the best selection of interesting people - you can access it through Nerve.com, Village Voice personals, The Onion personals, and Salon.com personals, just to name a few. I also tried lavalife, but it had a really pain-in-the ass user interface and the selection just wasn't as big (unless you're serious about moving to Canada, which is where 2/3 of the people seemed to be located).
  • A friend of mine is getting married next month... he met his bride-to-be on Nerve.com 5 years ago. They both lived in Astoria, about a block from each other, it turns out.
  • I would recommend trying personal ads. I met my husband through the Village Voice ads back in the late '90's.
  • Two of my friends, who are both now engaged, met through Nerve.com (which uses some sort of syndicated personals, available through several other sites like Salon.com and others).
  • yeah, arielbl mentioned that already - spring street personals. i highly doubt there is a single person alive in new york who has not already tried online dating. i would venture to guess that the original poster, and other single people who contributed to this thread, are looking for alternatives to online dating. it's fatiguing after a while.
  • Soda seems like a happening spot. I went there way late last week on like a Wednesday and there was a fairly good crowd there. Good thing my friend came along or I would've gotten pounced on. YMMV of course.

Other options: recruit other neighborhood folks to DH so there will be a greater concentration of singles; take a class; go to parties; and the last resort, ask friends to hook you up.
  • i am going to try on line dating, seriously.
i should have a picture taken.
the only thing is that it's kind of difficult for me to fill in all the questions they have since english is not my first language.

thanks for all of your sincere advice.

    tk
  • Weddings and funerals are the best places to find singles.

Yeah, this advice is parasitical in nature, but it does work...
  • Great question. Great mystery.

I agree, online dating can be grueling. I see interesting people every single day in the hood but it's not like I'm going to approach these people like I'm running for office.
  • A Daily Heights-sponsored singles event?
  • Apparently all you need to do in this neighborhood is smear yourself with Essence of Carneviento.

    Cures rickets and scurvy too!
  • ana.log wrote: A Daily Heights-sponsored singles event?
Haha yeah right. For like the 4 of us!

Perhaps we can combine 2 obsessions in one and prop ourselves outside El Carneviento and pounce on cute boys/girls that get caught up in the meat smell web.

yes, but as its oil based, it is not advisable to use it as lube for latex based prophylactics.

  • just put a large cardboard around neck says single :p. and hope someone bites lol.

I don't tend to. If i hit something I already read, I tend to stop. And since I havent been here much lately I knew something was off when I had read things still on the first page. Ressurrecting the things we talked about 6 months ago is kinda old, you know? Why not just jump in from the present and go forward?

so any good insights on where to meet singles? so far, I've had nothing but lousy luck (or bad taste) in the local toys from soda - they're all either attached (whether they tell you or not) or complete jackasses or both. need new playthings.

I heartily second the Soda bash there. I love the place as much as the next person. I am there every tuesday night just cause. But honestly it is a complete date bar. I know people who live in the nether world of brooklyn who still take dates to Soda. Not exactly a swinging singles scene. I even asked one of the bartenders about it and he couldn't give me a good answer. I chalk it up to the damn tables in the front. Regardless I will go there for the beer and the music (when it isn't too loud).
