Faux Chickens?

When my in-laws moved to Underhill many, many, many years ago the block on which they lived had only about 4 houses (which were owned by my in-laws' family) and across the street was a vacant lot. They all have large yards and at the time they would keep roosters and chickens there. At one point my mother in law had about 30 chickens in her yard . My father in law grew up on a farm and believed that raising your own food was safer and cheaper. Many of the people who lived in the area were very poor or were recent immigrants. There were quite a few people who would barter with her for eggs in exchange for home grown veggies, home made bread, etc. Some even took some chicks to raise as their own. Then as the neigborhood changed many people complained about the roosters and chickens and so many of them were given away. I think as the old guard moves out they leave these little guys behind.
Maybe that can explain why there have been many chickens and roosters wandering around. -
Amazing story. Thanks!

Ah yes, I knew a woman who had one stuck on her roof all winter. We also currently have a chicken a little freaked out and trapped in our Community Garden and have called NYC animal control about what to do.

i've seen 2 roosters and a big fat hen in one of the prospect park medians near grand army plaza!

What a great story Stacey. I would buy my eggs fresh from a neighbor if I could. I wonder if it's legal to have a legitimate henhouse in your backyard. Of course, the neighbors might complain about the noise.

Until the uber-local eggs become available, you can get very fresh eggs at the green market.

It was pretty cool Susan. The brown eggs were fantastic.
I have to agree with Carnivore that the eggs at the greetn market at pretty much the best around.
Howdy, Stranger!
