Park Slope Lexicon (add your own terms)

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Since there appears to be some confusion among newcomers as to what many things in Park Slope are called, I thought it might be useful to provide some guidance. These are some of the most commonly mistaken/neglected terms I can think of, feel free to add your own:

The usually-narrow concrete passageways or 'yards' between/behind apartment buildings are called "alleys" or "alleyways." You might hear some older folk call the ones behind buildings "courtyards."

The stone steps in front of your house are called a "stoop."

The concrete 'yard' in front of most brownstones, behind a fence, is called an 'areaway,' pronounced "airy way."

The front part of your hallway, behind the frontmost doors where the mailboxes are, is called a "vestibule."

  • Are you being facetious? Like these terms are not used in other cities and this is a Park slope phenom only? I've heard them all before.{redacted, I was grumpy and said Obamanut just hates gentrifiers/newbies more or less, my apologies for even mentioning it

  • I knew as soon as I saw your name under "last post" on this thread, before I even opened it, that the response would be some snide, asinine personal attack.

I attached the "Park Slope" to my thread because this is a "Park Slope" message board, and last time I checked, threads were typically supposed to have some relation to this neighborhood otherwise they get moved to the "Lounge."

Either way, if you have no relevant terms of your own to add to this thread (since you apparently know them all already), please refrain from ruining it.

  • actually, i'd never heard "areaway" and am happy to know it.

stoop i did know, but it is pretty nyc specific.

i love the different words for "selling stuff from my house" in all the places i've lived: yard sales growing up in NC, tag sales in MA, garage sales (even from apartments) in Chicago, my parents report "estate sale" in little rock (even when not following a death)...but stoop sale is my favorite.

  • Sorry, but given you posting history, I assumed this was a I hate newbies thread. If not I am truly sorry I misjudged. I'm just tired of all the PS hating that goes on in this board. As far as the "asinine attack" PLEASE do PM me or Email me and I'd be more than happy to hear out your examples to this effect. I really do mean this. The PM/Email button is below my post, let talk I would like to know what you think in all honesty so I can rectify or clarify.

  • Nutcase.. lay off Mamacita! I am part of the minority of at least 2 because given your previous contributions to this forum I assumes that you were being snide, or facicious or whatever else but certainly not straight forward.

    My apologies!

  • McClaren (and that other stroller with the nuclear waste symbol that I can't remember) = stroller (definitely NOT Graco!)
Baby Bjorn or sling = front baby carrier
    Playdate
    "socializing" dog or child

As I was walking along PPW the other day, a mother walking behind me was asking her toddler in the stroller 'if he would like to have a "playdate"' with some other kid. Needless to say, hearing that made my blood boil.

This discussion is making my blood boil (and my stomach slightly sick).
