Best Post office to apply for Passport?

I know that is a loaded question, but I have to Apply for passports with my 2 young children in person and I know of all the horrors of the local Post Offices in the area. Does anyone know of one that might be not so bad?

  • I actually have had really decent luck with the 9th st post office here in the slope...people bitch about it, but I feel like those people have never had a truly horrible post office experience (like the Myrtle branch in bed stuy which is a total nightmare.)
  • ah man Carmen id agree with you but that place ruined my life once. thats so crazy because i was going to suggest that post that you had that horrible time at. it was a breeze for me a while back.
  • I have EXTENSIVE experience with the Myrtle branch after living in bedstuy for 18 months and working from home (lots of packages!) and I can honestly say I would pay double rent to avoid anywhere that office serves. Avoid at all costs!!!
  • ah as do i Carmen. and i'll say for mailing purpose that post office is by far the worst post office in the whole UNITED STATES hands down. but with the passport at 9th street oh man it was such a nightmare for me.. really imo the post office downtown brooklyn the MAIN 1 during the early hours is perfect !
  • The post office on Atlantic, heading downtown, was not doing passports a couple weeks ago when I was there. Don't know why.
  • I haven't had very good experiences at any of the post offices in the area in general but when I applied for my passport a few years ago I went to the one on 9th Street. The wait wasn't as bad as I feared but I still had to wait. I had to go on a weekend so I don't think that helped matters. One of the keys is to do all the paperwork and forms ahead of time. Reserach online to make sure you've got it all. That will help speed up the process.

I ended up in line behind a couple that didn't speak English very well, had their daughter (10 years old or so) trasnlating for them, and had no forms filled out. I had my forms ready ahead of time and check ready to sign. Once I got up to the window it only took a few minutes.

    Good luck.
  • If you can get your kids on the train take them to the post office in lower Manhattan directly across from the WTC site (on Church Street). My kids went there when they had to get new passports and we were the only ones there for passport service on a weekday late afternoon. Just call ahead to make sure that you are there on a passport day as they don't provide the service every day.
  • My bf did it at the Atlantic (near Target) one and I would not suggest it. He went multiple times during their supposed passport hours and was told the passport office was closed and the advertised hours were wrong.

He finally got to the passport office one day and she told him his pictures weren't valid for passports (he went somewhere that does passport photos, and they looked just like any other passport photo to me). She said he could just go across the street to some guy and get new ones quickly. He was pissed and suspicious of motives (the guy was obviously her boyfriend who she was sending work to), but he needed the passport and did it.

Just for general mailings and such, I've found the 9th St workers to be really helpful and friendly, nothing like the ones at the the Atlantic/Bedford location where I used to pick up packages--the worst service ever and the police always had to come break up a fight on busy days.
  • Thanks everybody for the head's up about the good and the bad ones. I was talking to a friend and they suggested the Windsor Terrace Post office as a good option.

I'm fairly certain WT does not do passports - but for most other things, it's a good bet.

Good idea, I'll have to check on that. Thanks.
  • my daughter & i had a smooth experience when we went to the post office near borough hall to apply for her passport a few weeks ago. there was hardly any line, the person behind the window was pleasant & knowledgeable.. and we were out of there in maybe 15-mins.
  • Definitely the main branch in downtown brooklyn, on Cadman Plaza. quick, relatively clean, almost pleasant.
  • I put my app in at the 9th Street one and had my passport 10 days later - I didn't even pay for a rush or anything. Color me impressed.

Here's a photoshop template for making your own passport photos:

Really? I've heard total horror stories about the PO in WT.

No horror stories from me, and I've been going there for 11+ years. They are not a full-service branch (e.g. if the post office can't deliver a package to you, it goes to Van Brundt, not WT).

Lines are generally short and staff is friendly enough.
  • Doesn't the PO on 8th Ave & W.34th do passports? I recall going there awhile back nd breezing through the process.
  • I would recommend going to the main Brooklyn post office on Cadman Plaza downtown. The staff there seems more experienced than at some of the local branches. If you go first thing in the morning there shouldn't be much of a wait.

They are open Sunday mornings, which is a real quiet time there. I did my kids renewal there last time - it took less than 5 minutes. You can get the current hours from the State Dept web site (travel.state.gov/passport)
