use twitter?

Hey y'all, I was thinking it would be nice to adopt a hashtag for the neighborhood. Anyone with me? If you use twitter and update about something going on in the hood, tag your tweet with #prohts. Don't know what hashtags are? - see http://www.hashtags.org

  • Brooklynian has a twitter account! Check us out and send us neighborhood updates :alien:
  • even better.
  • I haven't been twittering and am wondering if anyone gets anything out of it. It just sounds like a way to waste time to me and/or a way for people to access me to send soft sell ads about their work/business. Thoughts?
  • i resisted twitter for a long time b/c i couldn't see any possible way in which it would be useful (and frankly, i'm kind of over knowing where everyone is all the time). about two weeks ago though i decided to try it out since i have a hefty amount of friends/colleagues who use it.

i'm pretty meh about it, but think there are certain ways in which it could be used interestingly. when paired with hashtags, all tweets about a certain topic get housed in one place. during the course of the mumbai attacks this week i used the service to get a better sense of what was actually happening from moment to moment (vs. after news has been filtered through beaurocracy and censors). (http://hashtags.org/tag/mumbai) and to see what news other people were looking at.

i thought it might be good for the neighborhood b/c one could, say, tweet out 'party at barrette is slamming' or 'i just walked into fermented grapes and they're having a tasting right now' or 'i just got jumped on sterling' etc.. and you wouldn't need to be near a comp. to do that (a lot of the time when i get back to my machine and want to post about things they're long done). so far the nice thing about twitter is that you can go look at it whenever, but it doesn't really intrude into your daily life unless you customize it to.

of course everything can be abused and people could over-post, but if you're not looking at it, it doesn't really make a difference.

That account last tweeted a month ago. Any plans for it to be more active?
  • You know . . . you can set up a Twitter Feed from the RSS of the site - automatically tweets what appears on the RSS . . .

I can't see that being my delivery method of choice for this content, but you might

I set this up. I wanted it to be a "collaborative twitter" so we could all post to it. I just never figured it out. Is there a way to do that? Is hashtags an answer?
  • OK, I'm reading this tutorial: http://www.wildapricot.com/blogs/newsblog/archive/2008/03/11/an-introduction-to-twitter-hashtags.aspx

We are now following /hashtags user on twitter. Hashtags just followed us back.
I just posted a test hashtag post here: http://twitter.com/brooklynian.

I don't see it on hashtags.org yet. Twitter folks, do a test #brooklynian tweet!

I guess it would show up here: http://www.hashtags.org/tag/brooklynian
And you could subscribe here: http://www.hashtags.or/tag/brooklynian.atom
But as of now I'm not seeing anything yet.
  • nice. looks like it's showing up now.. i just did a test tweet and i don't see mine yet, but maybe it just takes a little bit.
  • confused. So I can't actually follow @brooklynian to see tweets that are tagged brooklynian - I have to employ another service to follow hashtags?

I rather just follow @brooklynian. Won't it show up there?

DH - get some content in there by sending the RSS feed of Brooklynian to the Twitter account via http://twitterfeed.com/

Additionally, people from this community who want to hashtag brooklynian can do that . . .
