14-Year-Old Fatally Shot in Bed-Stuy

Last night around 8:30 p.m., Mario Avilaz "died in a hail of gunfire" between "at least two shooters in front of a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building," the Daily News reports. Avilaz, described as a good studentl, had been hanging around outside his building at Kingston Avenue and Herkimer Street. The police have not disclosed what the motive was, but a community activist told the Post he thought Avilaz was "hit by a stray bullet from a nearby dispute" (perhaps a fight between two girls). His mother tearfully told the News, "I was getting ready for Christmas, and now I'm getting ready for a funeral. I'm nothing without my son - my only son."

Just read about this on AM New York. awful, just awful.

Three or four weeks ago there was a fight between groups of teens from that building and the one across the street. Bunches of kids were hanging out on the porches of the two buildings, talking excitedly, laughing. One of the vendors nearby told me that he was packing up early because of the fight that had just ended. He said that he thought the fight would start up again, and he didn't want to be around for that. The police eventually closed the street down (Kingston between Fulton and Herkimer).
Last night people were leaving flowers and lighting candles for the child who was murdered. Does anyone know if they caught the people who were shooting the guns? -
Here's an article my friend just sent me about the shooting http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/nyregion/04shoot.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion
