Electricity - anyone else having issues? — Brooklynian

Electricity - anyone else having issues?

mr. tips
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
This week we've been having issues with our electricity - lights flicker and sometimes will reset our answering machine or even restart my computer. I talked to the landlord (who we really like, btw) and said he had the electrian come by and check out the box downstairs and everything was ok and that "they" are doing work down the street. Well, after that - all day saturday was like it had been resolved. but yestrday we lost power for 30 seconds 3 times! Its scary b/c thats no good for electic equip - esp computers.

So is this "work" affecting anyone else in the area?

Washington ave btwn park & sterling.

EDIT: its a completely random issue - sometimes nothing happens and sometimes its a bunch.

  • This happened last summer to my neighbors on Underhill. The light flickered for about a week and then finally went out. Con Edison had to come and dig up in front of their house. When they were done, about a month later the person next to that one lost power and then the third house.

We have been doing work on our house and our lights used to flicker and we tripped the fuse box a few times. The electrician fixed our grounding wire (which we were told is the MOST important part of any residential electrical system) and it has been perfecft ever since.

Good luck and make sure you have all your valuable equipment plugged into power surgers.
  • i live on washington btw sterling & st.johns and all i can say is that we have to replace all the light bulbs all the time --- not that they blow out at the same time, but probably about 1-2 per week. plus, intensity of lights tend to flicker and dim randomly. totally blows, maybe it is related to your problem or atleast similarly crappy electric work.

random::: my friend on park place recently got an electric bill for over $1,000 -- maybe people are tapping in to other accounts and causing power surges. who knows...

1 or 2 a week?!?! That aint right!!
  • I highly recommend the compact flourescent bulbs. They've made them a lot better then the first generation so they have a much softer light, much closer to what an incandescent gives off.

They cost a little more but you never have to change them, they can last 7 years. They also use a fraction of the electricity so they really do pay for themselves. If you watch the home depot circulars they go on sale a few times a year and you can pick up a 6-pack for $10. Otherwise they are around $3 a bulb. Totally worth it to not have to get up on a step ladder and mess with the light cover to change a bulb every couple of weeks.
  • So other people in the building are having problems too...hopefully it will get resovled soon.

i am going to try some, pick them up at the co-op... but i wonder if the seeming power surges will blow these out as well.

so is there someone i should call about this?! never really thought about it before, never seem to have the time to... :?

call coned. call your super. I would at least home for a small rent reduction to cover the cost of bulbs.

Definitely call Con Ed. They might tell you that you have to have an electrician come and say it is a Con Edison problem. You will get reimbursed by Con Ed for any payment you make to a licensed electrician.

thanks, stacey! is this something you had to do?
  • actually, could it be the light bulbs at the co-op?! for example.. any other people have problems with co-op light bulbs easily blowing out?!

Yes. I had to have an electrician come and he charged me $125 to tell me it was the line Con Ed supplies to my house. I called Con Ed right away and they took care of it within 24 hours and after I faxed them the reciept, they credited my account the $125 I paid the electrician.
