Police put skywatch on Washington and Sterling
Anyone see this?
It was parked for a long time on Franklin and St. John and today I saw the police putting it up. I asked them what it was and they said "Its a 'skywatch'" I said "what does it do?" he said "It video tapes everyone on the street"
Harumph.
Im pretty sure I dont like the idea of it. It feels yucky and invasive and it only serves to videotape crimes so they can catch people *after* the fact.
And I would bet my sad sad 401k (why not?) that the crimes that may have been committed there will just move up the block and out of the way of candid camera.
It also feels oddly like some futurist sci-fi big brother.

this is the kind of big brother ish I can tolerate. They've been doing this in London on a massive scale forever. It's not like FISA where the federal government is eavesdropping on your personal space. This is to law enforcement what instant replay is to pro sports -- might only have a limited effect most of the times, but could make a HUGE impact once in a while. Let them watch.

This is the second piece of good news I've had today. The other piece is that the closing for our coop on Sterling place is to be December 22. A law abiding citizen has nothing to fear from vigilant law enforcement. If you'd seen some of the suspect drug deale's hanging out in some parts of the neighborhood, you'd want increased surveillance to

It is more than just an idle camera; there are two officers who man the device at all times. One sits in the observation booth and one stays on ground level.

I don't really have an issue with this. If someone wants to watch me amble up Washington in my coat and hat, either with their own two eyes or a video camera then so be it. I don't really get too bothered with all the "Big Brother" stuff, especially if that means that those among us who would do less-than-brotherly things are getting recorded while doing this.

Given that there's an enormous amount of private video being taken, what's the worry with the police getting in on the act? At least police are publicly accountable.

My only issue: it looks like ass.

If you'd seen some of the lowlife drug dealer's hanging out in the playground on Park Place between Washington and Classon, you'd want increased surveillance too. My apartment will overlook that playground, and I'll have a camera trained on that playground at all times until every last drug dealer is safely secured at Riker's Island.
Are you sure they are drug dealers because last time i checked my brothers and his friends don't sell drugs yes they do drink beer but they don't sell it. Remember you are moving to our neighborhood. was born and raised in this neighborhood we built it up just because you can afford to come live here now doesn't mean you have to bad mouth people you don't know. Remember to be nice to your neighbors and they will be nice to you. disrespect your neighbors and you won't be a neighbor anymore. -

If your brother and his friends are drinking beer in a playground, then they need to grow up and get the hell out. This neighborhood is as much yours as it is that of the Irish, Italians, Dutch and Native Americans that came before you.. meaning not at all. Here's a tip.. I'm a home owner, so welcome to my neighborhood. Now pull up your pants and put that frikkin 40 away before I have you arrested, punk. -
Well its nice to know that your brothers are not selling beer in the Park. Last time I checked, Parks are supposed to be for kids to play, in a safe and kid friendly environment. As for the neighborhood being yours, the neighborhood, before it was yours was someone elses, IE: Italian and Jewish, unfortunately when it started becoming your neighborhood, they were forced to leave so you could build up your neighborhood with Violence and Drugs. So thank you for your contribution neighbor!

Exactly. Once the violent crime stops, they'll find something else to use it for--like parking tickets. Truth.

Seriously though, when I was much younger, I feared the police, because they made it their business to harass young males who are the traditional enemy of the state, and where I lived there was a problem with corruption, brutality, shooting unarmed people dead every other week. A friend very much like me but 15 years older explained (in the context of a misdemeanor he felt at liberty to practise) that he liked the police had nothing to fear, because he was a non-minority middle-class professional home-owner and the raison d'etre of the police was to protect his interests, his property, and people like him. Turns out he was right, but it took me a while to grow into his situation. -

The "Irish, Italians, Dutch, and Native Americans" moved to the area for legitimate reasons--they had hardworking communities there, and supported each other. They went to church together, knew each other's grandmothers, and lived authentic lives there. Conversely, when one's home purchase is based solely on following 'trends' and the approval of others, there's a lot less claim of 'community' to be had, as well as, I predict, a lot less longevity.
Good luck trying to make Crown Heights 'your' neighborhood. -
Ok madman first all did i say they were drinking the beer in the park. I said they do not sell drugs. There was no mention of beer being drunk in the park. Second last time I checked my family has lived in this neighborhood and owned our buildings since 1908. congrat's you finally own a home. Just don't go around blabbing about people in the park you don't know a thing about. Two of those guys your talking about came back about a year ago from iraq and one just inlisted and is schedule to leave in two weeks to fighting a war to keep your dumb ass safe. Thats really great. King without a crown you should just walk into the play area you might just find all of those men are married and they are there with their children. all of them have been friends since they were in kindergarden that very same school P.S. 216 elijah G stroud. Sometimes people just need to get more facts before they talk. Hint: There is an detectives unit across the street from where they sit if it was a problem don't you think the cops would have done something about them. Obviously their not doing anything wrong. but according to the both of you (madman and King with outa crown)they can not hang out with their friends and have their children bond with each without being cast as drug dealers or men sitting in a park that only children so go to. Thank you now i see why my neighborhood instead of getting better is getting worse. drugs are gone but idiots are coming.

That Park has been the site of numerous arrests/mini-riots/shootings along with constant drug dealing and drug using. As for the Police facility across the street, the building houses The Brooklyn Robbery Squad/Special Victims along with Borough based Anti-Crime. All of which want nothing to do with enforcment directly across the street where they work and park their private vehicles. As for drugs being gone, thats pretty funny!

Everyone that contributes to these blogs need to focus more on important issues like how the city has proposed to stop the 48 bus running on the weekends, overnight. The 45 bus will not run after 11pm on week nights and weekends. There will be no 71 bus service at all. or 65 bus service. These are things you need to focus on and how to sign the petition to stop the city no everyone wants to focus on who sits in a park.

You are the one who talked about your brothers drinking beer in this context (selling drugs in the park). If you didn't mean that they were drinking in the park you should be more clear when you type.
Umm. No. We live here together. If you want it to be yours, buy the whole damn thing. Otherwise make way for the other people who have all the same rights as you do.
Remember you are moving to our neighborhood.
We have the right to say whatever we want, as do you. And I find it amusing that you take credit for both "building up" the neighborhood and making it inexpensive. You made it sooo nice to live there that demand fell and it's cheap to live there now? How's that work?
just because you can afford to come live here now doesn't mean you have to bad mouth people you don't know.
Respect has to be earned. And badly-worded, veilled threats don't earn you shit. Unless you are just threatening to move. In which case, please have a box.
disrespect your neighbors and you won't be a neighbor anymore. -
I imagine this 'threat' being spoken loudly in a nasally voice, veins protruding from forehead, simultaneously as you typed it out on your keyboard.
It's not a threat. I will report anyone I see drinking on a children's playground. If you find that threatening, then you are the one with a problem. Oh, and you imagined wrong. But if it makes you happy, go ahead.
Nice bit of self-righeousness, declaring legitimacy on historical shifts in populations. Maybe we should all check with you before we decide where to move. You seem to know what's best for everyone else.
The "Irish, Italians, Dutch, and Native Americans" moved to the area for legitimate reasons
Yeah.. when I was pretending to look for a safe, clean place to live in New York with good access to transportation and amenities like groceries, etc... what I was really doing was following the latest fad in a blind attempt to be fashionable. As if PH/CH is even close.

Again, a really nice piece of pompus prose. I imagine you attempting to peer into the soul of people you pass on the street, fooling yourself that you understand anything about anyone. Passing judgements from some self-appointed moral high ground.
You are a piece of work. You probably also take credit for Obama's win, and couldn't immagine that someone like me would donate the maximum and travel to battleground states to canvass door to door on the weekends.
Nah. You know everything about everyone else.
It already is. I must be lucky.
Good luck trying to make Crown Heights 'your' neighborhood. -
Perhaps in repsonse to recent shooting on st johns/classon (or was it washington?)
I realize this ts on a different block but skywatch is a form of psychlogical control and the place where it is located now is much higher traffic. -

You went looking for a "safe, clean place to live in New York" and wound up in Crown Heights? lmao.. You've obviously been getting some stellar advice from those around you, so you don't need to hear any more from this 'know-it-all.'

Anyway, for your future endeavors, you should know that the entitlement-based attitude you're sporting makes folks like you disliked by (1) the people whose community you've entered, and, more importantly, (2) the cops. That's not a very good combination. But you'll find out eventually. 8) -
I think we are all entitled to have children's playgrounds free of alcoholics and drug abusers. The fact that I got upset about it is one thing. The fact that you can somehow turn that into a personal indictment of a complete stranger is another.

Yes, the rules state that adults must be accompanied by a child. -

And yet, are strangely silent on the matter of the adult's state of mind. Shoes must be worn at all times though. And don't attempt to drive a toy train or tractor or operate other heavy machinery if affected. -

Now THAT'S funny.
Thanks for deflating my rant. I needed that. -
Moufaisbad -- from her photo -- looks like she's been assaulted, so you would think that she would like this sort of "big brother" stuff. Holy christmas... that photo could be the poster for a women's shelter.

I know anecdotal prose doesn't prove much, but me and most people I know have only had problems with the police when we were doing something illegal
If there were no problems on Washington Av, with the NYPD being stretched as it is fiscally they would not put a skywatch up just to harass people
As far as people crying about new people moving into the neighborhood, money talks, and rather than fear the new people you should look to try to live together with them, etc... -
Sky Watch is probably not so good for open house days or property values in general. In addition, has its effectiveness even been measured? I'd bet the precinct measures it against whether it gets the local block associations off their back with regards to complaints about crime, lol. Like someone said above, it probably just moves the crime up the street or around the corner.
-
I think the advantage is to the police: If I was a cop, I'd rather be above the street in a bullet proof, heated box, than standing on a corner.
P.S. Yup, over the weekend I saw the characters who used to hang at "Washington and Sterling" at "Franklin and Sterling". Its a cat and mouse game with the police.
Howdy, Stranger!
