The Black Sheep

Subject: Extra soccer

Sort of on topic here, anyone got any info on the new bar that's opened on Bergen Street where Cafe Ma used to be? Calls itself the Black Sheep, shows soccer, but I haven't been in there yet.

  • I haven't been there either. I think it's run by the people who own Delima next door. I've been meaning to check it out, but it's pretty hard to walk past O'Conner's. Perhaps I'll hit it tonight.
  • FYI, the owner of The Lighthouse on the corner of Carroll and 5th told me that they were planning to have every single match of the upcoming World Cup on their screens no matter what the cost. She also said they would be open for business 24/7 during the event.

I know it's a ways off, but I thought I'd get the word out.
  • Well, that shouldn't really cost them, since all matches will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC and other affiliated channels.

They will also be in HD.

I'm hoping this Union Hall place on 5th and Union turns out to be a good place, I'm hearing it is going to be a soccer friendly bar!
  • Yeah, I saw this mentioned in another post, but I don't get it. Fifth and Union, you got four corners - Brooklyn Industries (NW), Something Else (SW), Body Reserve (SE), and the Check Cashing Joint (NE) - all apparently going strong. Where's the bar going to be?

    On Union behind Body Reserve.
  • Union Hall is owned by the people who own Floyd's in Brooklyn Heights. It is going to be very soccer friendly and they are moving pretty quickly and should be open by the time the Cup gets here. The place is pretty big and should accommodate a good crowd. I own the bar down the street from Floyd's in Brooklyn Heights and have become good friends with these people. I really think this is going to be a great spot for the neighborhood.

In other words - it will be out of business within a year. Is there a duller sport in the world? YEAH! We played Trinidad and Tobago and tied 1 to 1. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
  • BigBubba, you should check it out once it opens, I think it's going to have a good following. The Brits love their Football, and usually are out in droves to watch the games on Saturday/Sunday mornings.
  • Then Big Bubba you are really going to hate the 2 Bocce courts that will be in there!

Yup that will certainly kill any chance this place might have.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that several billion people disagree with me. I hope Union Hall does great. There are plenty of other places for me to watch my football (which I understand is only very rarely actually played with one's foot!)
  • then BigBubba, don't go.
    simple.

apparently a couple of Irish guys running Black sheep.
still a bit raw in there, waiting ot see if they order Setanta Pub channel and get some PPV matches or I'll have to continue to trek to Nevada Smiths, but they do have a Foosball table!

Two soccer-freindly bars within a few blocks seems like they could struggle a bit, but I'll give them both a try.

Oh I won't. If I want to catch a nap I'll watch golf. Soccer just bores me.
  • Thanks for all the info, by the way I went in there last night. There's something about the space that needs work before it can be cosy. But they still take deliveries from Deshima, which is handy.

As for football, can't say I'm a gigantic fan myself, although I'm usually dragged along to England games. I was sort of hoping they were real ale types like the Gate. Warm beer, that's the stuff.

I'd say that football results are more boring than NFL, but less boring than baseball. The play, though, I'd say is less exciting than baseball, but much more than NFL. The English premiere league's got hell boring of late.

    Yeah, roll on Union Hall.

Thanks for the tip! I love The Lighthouse and was wondering where I could watch all World Cup games. Always good to have some more soccer-friendly pubs, in my opinion.

But you know they're going down in flames to Sweden, right?

Sorry, lived there for years and love to tease them about it!
  • was in there last night. must fight over hang...

english league game on the telly. big telly

$3 wheat beer and 2 other brews as well
    {think it's only during happy hour tho'}

the jukebox needs some work -- it'd be most awesome if they developed a 'great lakes'ian playlist

good mix of people -- preppy/biker/goth/lesbian combo

the bar feels a little disorienting still
it's spanking new, gotta give it time
perfect setting for a quentin tarantino movie
i could totally see mr. pink arguing with mr. white in here

hey. i could probably order a pie from Peperoncino!

hmmm. wonder if they allow dogs?

    thumbs up!
