Another spa topic- non-frilly massage?
I want to get my boy a gift certif for a massage for xmas but I know he'll be turned off by a really frilly/fancy spa. I also don't want to go the opposite way and get him a chinatown, curtain-between-patrons massage. Thoughts of a place that's not too froufy but still provides a decent "experience"? I don't care if it's in BK or manhattan as he works in the city anyway...

I sent my husband to Opal once for a massage, not frilly at all, he felt very comfortable there.
I also have a friend who is a licensed masseuse who will come to your home or you can go to hers, you might want to go that route also.
Here's her website, she is very good:

Opal is definitely the way to go. They are great but very no nonsense. I gave a friend, who never in a million years would have gone for a massage, a gift certificate to Opal and he loved it. He's even gone back on his own.
I think you can even add the tip to the gift certificate so everything's taken care of. -
For those who've been to opal- any idea on the cost? They dont seem to have a website...

Spring Thyme on 7th Ave. A step up from Chinatown, but not fancy/frilly at all.

Leslie Goldblatt deNunzio - lesliemassage.com Talented, no-nonsense LMT. Plus very reasonably priced.

Carmen, I like massages too if you want to put a gc in my stocking!!!!!!!

I second lesliemassage.com...she's amazing

I liked Leslie's site- it looks like she works out of her home? Is it pretty nice and all that jazz? I've never done this "work from home" massage thing before so I don't know if they generally have you up on their kitchen table with a 2 year old running around or something haha
Leslie seems like maybe a good fit- the boy is an athlete and is always complaining about aches and pains. -
Leslie has a table in her living room...her cats are in another room, peaceful music/candles...and a magic touch. She has a lot of runners for clients...you won't be sorry. It is very peaceful and not frilly at all :-)

Did you look at Rachel's site? it's pretty nice too.

I went to Leslie a while back. Great massage, and she knows what she's doing. All too often I feel like I go to someone who just rubs my shoulders and whatever, but does not really solve my stress/knots/etc. Leslie knows what she's doing. It's in her apt, but is not at all dodgey.

Ditto on Leslie. She's the best.

I've always received great massages and acupuncture at Spring Thyme. However, you won't be in a private room. The practitioners work in divided areas and you can sometimes hear other conversations going on. I don't know how the therapists move around in such small spaces.

I third Spring Thyme. -
The massage at Diva Salon in Brooklyn Heights on Henry St. is very good. The space is a private room in the basement, that is nice enough, nothing fancy, but relaxing. It is very reasonable, $60/hour I think.

Soooo
I went with leslie- I actually got a massage by her on Sunday and then bought the gift certif after that. Her service seems like the perfect fit for him and it was great for me as well- thanks for all the recommendations! -
