Pedestrian bridge over Flatbush Avenue
As a PH resident who routinely crosses Flatbush Avenue on my way to and from Prospect Park (with speeding cars and trucks whizzing past), I'm always puzzled that more hasn't been done about this incredibly dangerous intersection. The new pedestrian island seems like a "band-aid" response to to the problem.
A couple months ago, I came across a proposal which suggested constructing a pedestrian walk way/bridge which would connect Prospect Park to Mount Prospect Park. This seemed like a great solution for those of us with dogs, kids and strollers in tow and could benefit the Gardens, the library and the Museum. It would also be a great way to open up access to Mount Prospect Park which has a lot of potential (following years of neglect, crime, gang activity, drug use, etc.).
The Atlantic Yards project will dramatically increase the number of vehicles using Flatbush Avenue. Even if Ratner's project doesn't move forward, there still needs to be a solution. How can we move this idea forward?

good idea but probably gonna be expensive and stuff. they need some on queens blvd the blv of death and maybe eastern pwky and ocean pkwy too.

The best solution to this problem, IMO would be to construct an overhead pass at Grand army Plaza. But that probable would not happen because the city spends money only on projects that have broad base support.I am sure the Ratner's project will include redisigning the traffic patterns in the area.
In the meantime it would not hurt to lobby our district representatives, vis-à-vis Latisha James and Major Owens and make pedestrain crossing one of our mid-term election issues. -
would be ugly.

i agree that a pedestrian bridge would be costly as well as a potential eyesore (not to mention the difficulty in getting community 'buy-in' on any particular design). the situation, in my mind at least, seems to require more of a traffic engineering solution than anything else.

Dream solution that would never happen:
Put 2 new entrances to the GAP subway, one at the northern tip of the park and one by the library. Then connect them all together by tunnel. -

What would be ugly? Mid-term election issues or ovepass? -

the overpass would probably be ugly.. but those concrete island and short poles are ugly as it is.. so perhaps the overpass would indeed be an improvement! -
The Willis Avenue Bridge across the Harlem river is for sale - they are replacing it, and the existing structure is going for $1 dollar, and the city will move it for free....maybe we should move THAT over Flatbush btw. Prospect and Mt, Prospect parks!

I know this would totally never happen, but, I'd love to see that traffic circle of death dug out and put in a tunnel underneath GAP. It would be wonderful to clean up the sight lines and make the plaza a pedestrain mall. Maybe we could talk Ratner into financing that!

Has anyone considered any kind of bridge is a mugging/rape/assault dreamland, and a tunnel would basically be a homeless drug hangout on top of everythingelse. Maybe its just my glass is half full optimism but I dont think either would be great.

for a long time there was a problem with cars coming from flatbush ave (heading north toward manhattan) and turning around onto eastern parkway. those cars routinely ignored the red light there so it was a real danger to perdestrians crossing with the light. my wife wrote to dept of transportation and they put a "stop on red signal" sign as well as a line on the road indicating where people should stop. but it's still a crazy intersection.

how about a big slide from the top of the g.a.p. monument into the park? climb up and wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
really, i don't know what you are talking about. eyes open and hustle, and this is an easy crossing. or just stick to the actual crosswalks - ever notice those signs with the red hand and green person? -

A+ response.
