Looking for a decent tailor

Ok, admittedly, I've lived in Carroll Gardens for a while, but as often times happens, with no recs for a decent tailor in the neighborhood, I have been hauling my delicates into Manhattan to get the nips and tucks in my clothing. I've gone to a few tailors in the hood as trial runs, but haven't yet found one with the combination of reasonable price (read: cheap) with quality work (read; can sew straight).

Any hidden gems in the area? Nothing too complicated needed, but it would be nice to have straight hems and no dangling threads for payment. Also, it would be nice if they spoke English in order to ask me a couple questions about what I may want or need.

I just had a uniform tailored at Bridge Cleaners... on Bridge Street and Montegue or Livingston. Definately on bridge street though. They did a great job. I had to hem a pair of trousers - it ran me 12 bucks including the dry cleaning.

Victor, the owner and operator at 'One-Stop' on Court Street near 1st Place, is one of the best tailors in the city as well as a charming friendly man.

You can't go wrong.

Subject: Tailor

I'm having the same problem...
Went to No. 1 Jeon's Dry Cleaning, was horrible. I had him shorten the sleeve of my suit jacket and he just moved out the buttons and took out the stichting, and it looked horrible! Yes, he's a dry cleaner, I don't know why I asked him to do it. Then I went to Seoul Tailoring and they were just as bad. I SHOWED him another jacket to have him replicate it but it was absolute crap quality work. I also took in a pair of jeans to have the leg narrowed, but not only did he narrow it he also SHORTENED the leg, which I didn't even ask for!!! These guys can't speak a lick of English, so there's a communication problem, which isn't a good thing when you have to explain what you want. I'm half Asian with an understanding of language gaps between English and Asian languages, so I spoke clearly andhe understood. The mistakes and the bad quality makes this place a no-go. Maybe for VERY SIMPLE things you can go here, but not for suit jackets or anything of the sort. I'm trying out the Italian guy on Smith at President to fix the suit jacket sleeve, so hopefully it works out...

Help! Soul Custom Tailor just can't get it right. I'm having trouble communicating how much I want my jackets taken in, so I'm done with them. The Italian guy on Smith is on vacation until September. Any other options? There's a sign advertising "Joe" the expert tailor in the window of a dry cleaning place on the corner of Clinton and Atlantic. I'll probbly end up taking my stuff to to Men's Wearhouse, though. At least I've worked with them before and know they're reasonably priced and listen to instructions.

Try Bridge Cleaners on Bridge St. off Fulton - its a great place and I have never had a problem with anything they have done since I started using them 10 years ago.

Told ya! Seould Taylor can't understand anything you're trying to explain to them. The Italian guy (Amando) on Smith between President and Union is indeed taking an extended vacation, which is too bad as excited I am to see his work on my jacket (that Seoul screwed up...), but they seemed to be in top of it when I went in, and his wife speaks perfect English (translator). You should try them out when they get back from vacation in September. I've heard from others in the area that "Victor" at "One-Stop" shop is in fact very good. It's closer to 4th Place on Court and I'll be trying them out soon. Post your experiences with these places so I can find my place!!!!

Subject: Victor @ One Stop

Just dropped a suit off with Victor at One Stop this morning and it was quite a different experience. This guy is a real pro - like no tailor I've been to up to this point. For example, he mentioned that most peoples' dominant arm is slightly longer than the other and asked if I wanted the jacket sleeve to hit the same place on both arms (rather than simply being the same length). This is certainly not the level of detail I was accustomed to. Needless to say, he was pretty horrified by the work that Seoul did.

I'll post the results when I get everything back on Thursday. BTW, the price for adjusting a jacket and pants and doing a few minor repairs (loose buttons and the like) was $60. Seems perfectly fair to me.

Subject: One Stop

Got my suit back today and I'm very happy with the work. There are a few details still to be worked out (goes with modifying a vintage suit, I suppose), but I have finally found my tailor in the neighborhood. Victor really is a personable guy - and he accepts credit cards!

Subject: Victor

I'm looking to get a dress altered-- does anyone have any experience with Victor's work on dress alterations?
Also, what is the phone number for his store? Is it an actual tailor shop

I haven't had dress alterations done there, but I just tried One Stop and Victor did a great job hemming my pants. He matched the thread & cuff style. I agree, he's very detail oriented and also very personable. I went back and dropped off some other pants that I'd been putting off hemming because I was nervous about finding someone I could trust.
