dog boarding (revisited)

anyone have good dog boarding experiences? I'm getting my first vacation in a long while and would like to go somewhere for a few days. I ran a search and the most relevant item was from 2005.

    My boys love http://glencadiadogcamp.com/. They have a blog where they post video of the dogs every day, sometimes several times per day, and the dogs get to have a bit of 'vacation', too. Prices are super reasonable as well, and they have pick up/drop off.

    That place looks great but where is it? Seems pretty far away.

    We always leave our pooch at Biscuits and Bath in Manhattan. They also have a blog where you can see pix of your pooch (make sure to get the password from them so you can access it- they respect your dog's privacy and don't want just anyone perusing their daily photos). We also like them because they don't put dogs in cages and opt for an open sleeping area.

    It can be pricey but it's worth it.

    My dog prefers to be the only dog at home, so I usually don't board him at these kinds of places, but I'll share what people I know have said.

    Glencadia does pick-ups in Manhattan and Brooklyn maybe once or twice a week. I know a couple of folks who have used it and they are very happy with it. If your dog won't get in a van with several other dogs, it might be a problem, though.

    If I were boarding my dog for a while, I'd probably go with Dog Abby in Red Hook (http://www.dogabby.com/). I've heard a few folks at off-leash say they've used it and all spoke very well of it. I like that they have some outdoor space.

    I've used Brooklyn Dog House for daycare and we had to leave him there over night once. For daycare, it's okay, but I'd never leave him there overnight again. The dogs are inside at all times and my dog will refuse to use the bathroom inside to a point where it makes him miserable. Plus, around busy times (holidays, three day weekends) it's really packed which can be overwhelming for the dogs in that small space. Just for the day, though, it's okay by me and my dog.

    Posh Pets on Flatbush Ave bet. Prospect Place and St. Marks Ave is really good my dog stayed with them this past august for two weeks and they were wonderful. My dog goes to them normally for grooming it was my first time leaving him and i would leave him with them if i have to again

    As pro dog walker and sitter, I recommend caution about boarding. Too many dogs, not enough time out of cages. And though staff try, safety is always a concern. Consider leaving the dogs home with a pet sitter where they can stay in their own routine, sleep in their own bed and have a caring person all to themselves while you travel. It is a little more expensive, but greatly reduces the potential cost of infections, injuries or illness contracted in boarding facilities. Naturally I recommend myself as a dog sitter, but check out fidobrooklyn.com for dog sitter listings. There are a number of really good sitters in our area.

    I have to agree with this ^^^ and I'm not a dog walker by trade.
    My dog(s) are sooo much happier when they get to stay home alone. Brooklyn Dog House was fine, but home was a million times better. And my dog wasn't mad at me when I came home. And I didn't feel hideously guilty dropping them off . . .

    Any chance a friend would sleep over, and you can hire a walker to fill in during the day?

    Subject: dog boarding services are quite reliable.

    in USA, there are so many dog boarding services, and they are found to be very reliable and help ful. they keep your dog like your son.

    Yes we do keep your dog like a "son" or "daughter" when you are away. My current dogsit is with a dog who needs the park, and he needs the park at 6:30am every single day and then again at 9pm with two short walks in between. I do it because dogsit pros try really hard to keep your dog on his real schedule. I consider I have two clients, the dog and you. Look locally for a dog sitter who will stat in your home with your dog and if you are careful and check references, you won't regret it. My next life I want to be a Park Slope dog.

    This may seem like obvious advice: but ask your dog friends to watch your pup.

    Zoka has many "dog friends" at the park. As I hate the thought of boarding my dog somewhere, we have a dog swap situation going. Other dog owners are not put out to the same level as asking your non-dog friends. Plus, obviously, they know how to take care of your dog as they have one. AND, they know they will be leaving town soon enough and can get you back.

    Works out great for us!

    check out the place on 5th ave between 12th & 13th. i haven't actually used them, but the workers showed me around there how they take care of their dogs, and it looked really really good.

    The first time I saw this thread, it made me think of a sport, like surfboarding. This time it made me think of "dog boarding" as something along the lines of waterboarding. Humorous as this image may be (really.. think about it..) I think it's also indicative of the toll that the holidays are taking on my morale.

    i would have to saw paws in paradise they dont lock up your dog they have there own space where your dog run around and plays and they have a backyard for your dog to do there bussiness its on 5th ave between 7th and 8th street
