The area is V-E-R-Y safe. I am a single woman and I often come home late at night without any problems. I walk from the 36 street station at 4th avenue to my home. It can get desolate, but that's about it. I have NEVER been followed, harassed or robbed

Now as for entertainment, you are kinda out of luck. As this is a immigrant Latino community, you will find that most things aren't geared for you in mind: (assuming you are probably a non Spanish speaking Caucasian from someplace with more bars, coffee shops and "trendy" places) No bad sentiments meant by the preceding statement.

Anyway, Laundry will be a hike (39th street between 4th and 5th) is the cleanest laundromat

Food shopping will also be a hike (KeyFood) on 5th avenue and 44th. That is assuming you want more "American" products and a cleaner kept store. Or Costco on 3rd ave and 37th

Fresh Produce is not hard to find, Rossman's on ~24th and 3rd avenue. The post office is also not hard to find 34th and 3rd.

Eating out will mostly be Mexican, Los Petrillos 4th avenue 39th street. Tiki Bar is a halfway decent bar, Maria's on 38th and 5 is a high end Mexican eatery with a cool bar.

The park is also near by, starts at 40th street and 5th avenue.

So for you and your family there won't be much night life entertainment (bars, restaurants), nor will there be much day time entertainment (coffee shops, trendy cafes, movie theaters). There also wont be great shopping in general,

BUT THIS IS A SOLID, SAFE, DECENT NEIGHBORHOOD, THAT MAY SOON BE PARK SLOPE THE WAY THE HIP KIDS ARE MOVING IN

By the way, all the cool eats and entertainment are a short bus trip away on the 63 bus to 5th avenue below 20th or the R train to 9th street.

So my suggestion is to move in while the prices are low and bear with the deadness for 1 year and watch how all these trendy little spots open up and people complain about high rents when you are comfortably locked into a low rent lease. 8) [/b]
  • c-town is moving in on 25th/4th, but i second the rossman's recommendation and also add that being that near to costco can save a whole lot of cash.

good luck finding low-fat or skim milk in ANY bodega (except the one on the corner of 5th ave/34th street). it took me 10 months to figure this out (though rossman's has skim-plus)
  • thanks everyone for the help! we moved around a bit from south williamsburg to brighton beach.

we have been checkin the area out for a while. from schools, groceries, places to meet friends. to being able to play and make music. we are both still young and finding the right place and for it to be affordable is tough. Its crazy because my wife and i both grew up and lived in queens, the bronx, or brooklyn. I actually prefer it to be rough around the edges but once you have a child I guess the whole perspective of where you want to live changes.

thanks for all the positive advice and hopefully we could return the favor one day

    no trendy cafe's? WTF!
  • You'll be close to some good bakeries, and some good, low-key restaurants with all day offerings. You're also close to the Green-Wood 4th Ave entrance...great walks all year round.
  • i think you'll be very happy there. the "lack of cool" places only runs deep as how much you desire such in the place you live. yea, it will continue to spread further south over time. yes its an easy bus or subway ride to park slope. but just spending time in different ships/bodegas/restaurants in the area you'll discover treasures and loved spots that'll make you fall in love with the neighborhood. there's an AWESOME deli on 4th and 23th i think, Margaritah's (ext block and spelling are escaping my lager mashed mind). its a walk from the blocks you speak of. but shit, if they dont make the best breakfast sandwich i've ever had in my life. get it on a hero. you can thank me later.
  • re: my last post. don't spend time in the ships. spend time in the SHOPS. spending time in the ships could result in something i dont wanna know about.
  • Having lived in Greenwood/Sunset for the better part of my 35 years the area is fine, safe and changing..all for the better...

Around 34th you also have the Deli on the corner, used to be called Perri's but I think it's called All-Star now. The Subway on 33 closed, but the one on 38th and 5th just reopened a few months ago, new ownership. I used to live in that building, and some of my family still does. La Parada on 32nd and 4th has some of the best rotisserie (spelling?) chicken I have ever had. Also, the Mobil on 4th ave used to be a Burger King, and when they closed it was vacant for years. Having the Mobil on the corner is great, it keeps the corner well lit, the sidewalks clean when it snows and the On The Run is a great bodega alternative in a pinch!

I only caution, and I say this since I work with many ex-NYPD that the High School may bring rowdy kids, but that's anywhere around a school. PS 172 is an excellent lower school and the principal has always received high marks. If we are still in the neigh when my daughter is of age, she'll be going to their Pre-K.

    Hope this helps!
  • I love this area and as it takes two steps forward it takes three steps back. Let's not forget what makes this community great. I'm sorry but hipsters and yuppies are not the pioneers of this great neighborhood. The people that moved here to start a life that did involve "the new scene" or "hip crowd" are the true pioneers. New or old, it really doesn't matter. Let's all work together to improve our area and save what we like best. Let's listen to each other and value all opinions.
