Dogs in Park Slope

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I was wondering how dog friendly is Park Slope? We are planning a move to the area and have a medium sized dog. Does anyone know if there are any dog runs in the area? Are apartments hard to find that allow dogs up to 50lbs? Thanks.

  • Prospect Park allows you to run your dog without a leash during certain times, check out here.

  • There are a lot of dogs in Park Slope. I don't know how hard it is to find an apartment with a dog, though. Dogs can be offleash in the Long Meadow before 9:00 a.m. and there is a huge dog scene there on weekends. Not a lot of dog runs, though. There is or was a small one in the park on 5th Avenue next to MS 51 but I believe that park is being renovated so I'm not sure about the status of the dog run. My dogs refuse to run in a dog run but thoroughly enjoy the park during off-leash hours.

    thanks for your replies.

It can be a bit challenging, but it is do-able. My boyfriend and I managed to find a place that would accept our Whippet and 120lb Irish Wolfhound, but it took some serious doing. It really helps if you're willing to bend over backward and be prepared to pay a pet deposit and have the owner/landlord meet your dog.

Get in touch with the nice people at FIDO: http://www.fidobrooklyn.org/ as I believe they've compiled a list of dog-friendly brokers and landlords. Good luck!

We've been looking for a whippet. Any advice on where to get one?

name your breed, and other specs - it's a brilliant adoption tool

you can also get an autoresponse email from nyc acc (nyc's pound) for a particular breed - they'll send you anything whippet-like for a month, then ask you to renew the request.

    [ewwww...that's petfinder.com singular.
    petfinderS.com is a spam site]

Thanks Pitu - great advice. We are looking to adopt a puppy this year too.

My darling Morgane comes from Pickle Hill Whippets.

    http://www.picklehillwhippets.com/

They're well regarded in the whippet world (I feel really goofy typing that), and if Morgane is any indication, you'll hit the jackpot with them. She's just the sweetest, friendliest, cuddliest, etc. l'il pup in the world.

And, erm, she has a blog. http://blogs.dogshowusa.com/
  • I know people have specific reasons for wanting a certain breed but I urge you to also consider adopting from a shelter such as North Shore Animal League, http://www.nsalamerica.org/adopt/adopt_dog.html or www.petfinder.com or any of the others in the area.

There are a tremendous number of dogs that are still flooding the shelters due to Katrina and many of them are being put to sleep because no one can take them.

I grew up with pure breeds and none of them can hold a candle to my muttigree that I got from North Shore.

If you do end up going for a pure breed, please make sure the breeder is reputable and not some backyard breeder. And lastly, please, please, please do not purchase any animal from a pet store, these places support very cruel breeding habits.

Thanks for reading and good luck with your new dog.

Is this a new fad? I don't think I saw a live whippet for 10 years, now I see at least one and usually 2 or 3 every time I take a walk on 7th...weird.
  • ^^^ 'twas me above - forgot to log in.

Anyhow, be careful when buying a suddenly popular breed. Breeding standards can take a big hit before the market adjusts - and by the time that happens we'll be on to the Puli.

park slope is heaven on earth for dogs -- having prospect park so near is pretty sweet

there are no dog runs per se. but prospect park is offleash every morning before 9am. and after 5pm in the nether mead.

a healthy dog owner community has developed around the park. as mentioned, check out http://www.fidobrooklyn.com/

great resource, especially if your dog is lost, need to find a walker, vet, etc... they have a listserv

medium - large size dogs are discriminated against in terms of price. rents are usually higher and your choice of apartments is limited comparatively.

if you wanna know more about the neighborhood first-hand, i recommend you check out craigslist for a 1-3 month dog friendly apt. rental. there's always a few available.

walking with your dog into non-food serving places is not out of the ordinary. no shop owner gets freaked out that you bring your dog inside to buy wine

and come summer, the sidewalks are littered with dogs leashed up outside sidewalk cafes while their owners are eating

Were you seeing a lot of dead whippets about?

She's not a fad - she's a deeply beloved 5-year-old who at 1.5 was the picked-on runt of pack, and she saved the life of our Wolfhound, who was utterly distraught by the death of his longtime companion pup - Lucy, a wonderful shelter dog. Our whippet is the best dog I've ever known.

I'm new to all of this - have been lucky enough to make a life with a man who has these two lovely dogs. Yup, they're purebreds, but he had one rescue mutt for 16 years, and another for 8, loved them both dearly, and lost them both to cancer. I'm active in a rabbit rescue organization, and have a wonderful l'il shelter bun.

We've had rescues and purebreds. Doesn't make us evil, or fad-followers. We just love animals of all sorts and origins.

    Well said kittywithawhippet.

    point of information -
you can have a dog that is a purebred AND a rescue. I do.

The NYC pound encourages you sign up for a breed alert. Petfinder is also set up to help you find the kind of dog you want, and there's nothing wrong with that.
People come up to me all the time and ask me what the dogs cost, it's freakish. I'm a walking petfinder advertisement...

Pitu - I tried doing this through the website but I didn't find the area to sign up. Was it on the ASPCA site or on Petfinder. Im actually looking for a puppy and would like a certain breed or a mix of that breed. Will they allow me to post for that? Sorry to sound so dumb :(
  • Fact remains that you see a lot more whippets now than just a few years ago - for whatever reason. I won't pretend I'm not curious. Also, "fad" isn't a dirty word, it simply acknowledges the reality that tastes ebb and flow, and dog breeds are not exempt from this reality.

No, I'm not going to do a Park Slope whippet census to prove this scientifically. These are my casual observations.

Since my remarks above seem to have given some the impression that I'm a big meanie when it comes to dogs, I will note that I am involved in greyhound rescue along with my brother.
  • Drano wrote: I will note that I am involved in greyhound rescue along with my brother.
And we're definitely going to welcome a rescue greyhound into our home someday. My boyfriend and I are both quite drawn to sighthounds, and both of our dogs know no other life than as part of a pack. I know it might sound ghoulish to be thinking ahead like this, but our wonderful Irish Wolfhound is getting to be somewhat senior, had a really nasty instance of Bloat recently, and there is no way in the world our little whippet could be an only dog. A little ahead-planning is, sadly, necessary for her sake. A greyhound seems a natural fit for a sighthound-inclined family, no?

BTW, these very nice people at WRAP do whippet rescue: http://www.whippet-rescue.com/

Pitu - what kind of dogs do you have? The questions I field about the wolfhound are INSANE. How much does he eat/weight/poop/cost? Is he a horse? Do you have a saddle for him? My boyfriend and the dogs just moved to Park Slope from Chelsea, so it's a whole brand new bunch of people who've never seen him. A bus driver pulled over, opened the door, and asked if he was an Irish Wolfhound! So long as no one goes for his head (do people not teach their kids to respect strange dogs for their own safety?), I'm always happy to answer.
  • Oh - the above post was me.

not dumb, just the wrong site -- the city's pound is
Animal Care and Control of New York City
    www.nycacc.org

they'll send you every possible mix of the breed you want, and probably throw in some pomeranians just for the heck of it -- you get a daily email with photos. Always the dog I wanted to see had no photo...so you go to
the place on Linden Blvd where you can scope dogs -- they also have a facility on 110th St in Manhattan/

with petfinder, you just have to keep checking in -- and they have bigger selection since they work with private rescues, so it's totally worth haunting the site. Lots of breeds have their own rescue groups, and there's neighborhood places like BARC in Williamsburg...
    ':D'
    good luck!
