For Judy (not meant to stress anyone else; but not that awful, hopefully informative)...
Hi Judy.. If you want, I'd be happy to talk to mom...
Trying to recall, that she is getting radiation (no chemo). Chemo is what knocks the shit out of you and makes you really sick. We won't go there unless necessary. So on to radiation.....
She will be fine with radiation. At the beginning it will be scary more than
anything. It will not hurt. And like they said to me at the time "it is the
only thing during cancer, that you have to do on your own" As you would
guess, you have to be in a room by yourself and they talk to you through
the window.
And it will be more of an inconvenience than everything, like mom, I had to
go everyday for seven weeks. It took longer to get there than the treatment.
I'm guessing this is what she can expect:
1. The start-up session takes very long (maybe an hour or so) cause they
have to create a mold to 'rest' the part of your boby getting radiated - with the objective of keeping you still. She will have that mold waiting for her each radiation station. Being still for long periods of time is the worst she'll endure at this time (other than the understood 'fear' of the unknown).
2. Just remembered, during the set-up she will get tatooted (that's part of the long process). I still have my tatoos on my chest, I'm cool. My problem was I have so many freckles on me that they had to look very closely to be sure. These are the markers they will use to line up the
radiation.
3. Hospital became very 'strict' about privacy and ensuring treating right person, so towards the end I had to announce who I was when going
into the radiation room (also they keep a picture of you posted which is
funny - cause I was bald and didn't look like the redhead in picture).
4. She will get used to the treatments. They are quick. Something out of
star wars. All these beams coming from ceiling and then the machine moves around. Again, the worst part (which is not bad) is being still and
not having to pee. It makes strange noise (again, star wars).
5. While she has to be totally 'clean' for treatments - as I said earlier,
Acquafour is good to use; bring it and put it on when she gets dressed
after treatment. Some women I met had very bad burns, raw-sunburn. Again, I was lucky given my olive skin - but I did use the Acquafour.
6. Toward the end of the treatments they do something - forgot what it
is called - something like coning - which is when the zoom in on where
the cancer was. At the end they give strong, concentrated treatments
to areas of concern. Never felt, or experienced anything different or worse.
Side Effects: I think the worse she'll experience is being tired. I did work during the treatments, but tired. I used to push myself and then get sick.. but that is because I didn't slow down. SHE WILL NEED HER REST. And it will be cumulative, as it goes on she'll feel more tired.
I don't recall anything else being awful with radiation. As I think of things
I'll let you know.
Then check w/doctor if she can be near babies, for example.
I know men getting radiation for prostrate can't put baby on
lap. I was concerned because Frasier (dog, not husband) :-)
slept in my arms and I was worried I would radiate him.
I hope this is helpful. Again, I'd be happy to talk to you or anyone.
I have to run now because my girlfriends coming by... I should be
around most of this week 908 689-1605.
Hope this makes your day a little easier - knowing - it will be alright.
Love,
Francesca -
