Exactly wasder but this is the vision as stated by Tish James. If I'm a small business owner on fulton street and I hear that it's not exactly an enticement to be pro-BID. And let's be real most of the businesses on fulton from washington to grand are pretty much despised or ignored by a good segment of the neighborhood.
So while they are for the long term prosperity of fulton street( I mean c'mon they've withstood some of the worse times) they're also aware of the ugly side of gentrification. We can look all around this city and cite examples. So yes if I own a mom&pop pharmacy, I am worried that despite me being ahead of the curve seeing the positive on fulton street, will the BID after bringing in the commercial viability ppl want, in turn bring in a Walgreens?
My first job was fulton street so I know first hand, the difference between having it being a one-way and two-way. Alot of flow comes through... you have students, ppl coming from work, ppl coming from shopping, more cabs coming through. People would hop off the bus, outta cab or take a footnote to later try a business that they thought appealed to them or provided a service of need. We got walk in business this way all the time. -

I think despised is too strong a word. Clearly there are many different sub-groups of people who want to be serviced by the retail on Fulton Street and some folks will be interested in some things and not in others. But there is an abundance of empty retail space so I would think there would be room for everyone.
