Song Thai Tues Dec 16th - horrible chemical smell in food
Heads up everyone...
I ordered delivery from Song on 5th Ave tonight.
Bit into a spring roll and was flooded immediately with a smell akin to paint thinner or airplane model glue.
I like Song and have never had a problem, so chalked it up to some random thing, and bit into the other one. Same thing. Incredibly powerful inorganic smell.
I called the restaurant and told them I didn't want a refund or replacement, just a heads up their deep fryer might have something wrong with the oil tonight and they should check it. I get a call back from the manager who is nice but evasive, saying that yes something was wrong with the spring rolls, so they threw them all away. But she refuses to say what was wrong with them or why they felt they needed to be thrown out, just that they tasted sour, but denies to me there was any chemical smell. We talked for ten minutes going in circles.
I'll admit she was pleasant about the whole thing and I think they're a decent restaurant but when I taste something horrible in my food and they throw it all out I want to know what is up so I maybe don't have to worry about having ingested poison. 311 was little help. I guess I have to wait and see if I get really sick.
I just got sick a little bit ago. If you ate there tonight and feel unwell, heads up.

how sick? do you think it's because you think you are poison, or because you actually ate poison. do you have the spring roll?
-
is there a doctor in the house?
-
she's probably dead now.
-
not necessary, young and modern
-
I'm alive, but feel like crap today. Threw up a little bit, was all, just was too embarassed to say it.
-
what's the protocol on stuff like this, legally. calling poison control?
-
Am kind of surprised that Song didn't protect themselves from lawsuit - we Americans looooooooooooooooooove a good case. Obvi xenus sleeps was traumatized enough to create an account to post about it. Hope you feel better!!!!!!!!!!
BP, throwing up is the best thing in this case, so the bad stuff doesn't actually go through your system. But you would have to save the food and your expelled food to prove anything. Gross. -

Hopefully this was not a true poisoning episode, but it is NOT always a good idea to vomit after ingesting chemicals. It all depends on the type of chemical ingested. Caustic chemicals, in particular, should not be thrown up because they can do double damage to the esophagus. It's usually better to go to hospital and be given something to counteract the chemical in the stomach.

Kind of off-topic, but I thought it important to clarify this point.
More on-topic, we had a similar thing with the awful Star of India on 5th Ave. Our food arrived with a horrendous plastic odor. We actually called them and had them redeliver, but the second order had the same problem.
Hope you're feeling better! -
How do you know if your injegested chemicals are caustic or just in a bad mood?

ok i snickered.
this thread is making me want pad thai. probably not the desires result... -
2 months ago Tacos Nuevo Mexico served me an entire glass of dirty sanitizer water instead of actual water. I had just bit into something hot and downed my whole glass with a couple of huge gulps before I realized it on the last gulp. The next day I was doubled over in excruciating pain in my lower back (kidney I guess?) for 2 or 3 hours. I almost walked to the hospital, but it eventually passed.
That's scary when that stuff happens. -
Ugh ugh, hope you're feeling better. I had the same thing happen with a seaweed salad from Kiku on lower 7th Ave - as soon as I opened the delivery container, I smelled something acrid and chemical, like nail-polish remover. I called them and let them know the salad was bad and they should check the whole batch. The woman on the phone seemed more interested in whether I wanted a replacement salad, not the fear of poisoning more customers.

Explains the big yellow sign had on their door for a few days... -
Vinegar, ammonia... what's the big difference?
I'll stick to homemade food for a while. -
well after getting ill the next day several times im now on a course of heavy duty antibiotics because my throat is all swollen. my dr had the right theory: someone cleaning probably dumped some ammonia or bleach or something into the stuffing for the spring rolls on accident.
i guarantee you that it was not vinegar. it was very heavy duty chemical.
so what's the protocol on this? im furious about it now. do i report them to the dhms? i still have the spring rolls. -
yes, you report. asap
