Applewood finally
Treated ourselves last night and had an incredible dinner at Applewood. Stuffed ourselves with bread and three kinds of butter, lobster bisque, roasted buternut squash salad, seared scallops and lobster. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so so so so giood. Everything was small - they were all small plates - but perfect. A bottle of Cotes Du Rhone was not expensive and yummy. I tried the maple Manhattan but was a bit disappointed-- it kind of tasted like potpourri.
If you have not been, go. Yum.

The food here is so awesome. The last time I was there, I had filet mignon. It practically melted. SO yummy!!!!

i love applewood, and i have to say, the stuff that comes with the bread is almost the highlight of the meal!

totally agree....one of the best places in brooklyn!!
i hope they do ok down there...the place seems a little underrated to me considering how great the food is... -
We finally ate there after moving down to South Slope. Wow, it was incredible. Definitely the best meal I've had in Brooklyn and one of the top 3 in NYC as a whole.
On a side note, I thought the 3 spreads with bread were awesome as well. However, we didn't fully hear the bread server when he explained what they were... anyway, we plowed through all 3. One, in particular was divine. As a recovering vegetarian, I was pretty surprised to find that my favorite was the rabbit whipped with duck fat. -
Totally agree, one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. I did the tasting menu with wine pairings a while ago and it was unbelievably awesome. They recently reduced the cost of the weekday tasting menu from $55 to $45 - really well worth it at the original cost and a steal at the reduced cost.

rabbit whipped with duck fat............ Peter cottontail?
Ok the three spreads we got were french butter, apple and beet puree and one that I swear was ranch dressing.
We didn't do the tasting because it was very meat-centric, but I am sure it's a great deal for meatheads! -

I've had that one. It was - SO. GOOD.
They switch up the spreads. I'm a also a big fan of the potato and bacon spread with sour cream.....
And yeah, the tasting menu is not such a good deal for a salad eater. -
Do you get a bike chain whipping with your meal?
-
Maybe if you ask nicely.

Oh jesus, this makes me want applewood so bad. It's the first place I ever ordered fish intentionally. I'm a carnivore...
jesus was the fish good -
Love Applewood. Have been several times for dinner and went for brunch for the first time a couple of weekends ago. Doors open at 10AM and the place was packed by 10:45. The grits were fantastic, everyone loved their omelets, and the hot cider was great on a cold Sunday morning.

Not really underrated...Adam Platt gave it rave reviews back in 2005 and NY Mag mentions it constantly and made it one of it's Top 100 in NYC...

And the 2 Robs made it a critic's pick...

David Shea is truly one of the real deal chefs around - and Applewood is definitely one of the Top 5 in PS.
Still wish the would find a way to dampen the sound though - it can get really loud in there when it's full. -
good to know, livetotravel.
thanks for those links. i'm glad to hear it! -
Subject: Applewood
Went there a few years ago on a visit back and agree, totally yum. Glad they are still around and in the former location of my beloved Blah Blah. Anybody remember that? Of course, Applewood's food is a vast improvement................ -

I liked Blah Blah...little toy soldiers and WWII love letters and all -
Yeah, I absolutely love Applewood. The Sheas are amazing! But I do remember Blah Blah fondly and was so sad when it left us. Took me forever to try Applewood out of some odd sense of loyalty to Blah Blah....

Hate to be a negative Nelly, but I went their two Valentines Days ago and was treated to an awful, bland, small meal. My wife and I dropped between 2-300 and I left and bought a slice at Smiley's. My wife seems to think that this was a Valentine's day snafu. I guess I just don't get the whole, "spend several hundred and leave hungry and unsatisfied thing."

Rule # 1 for serious diners: Never book on a holiday, particularly on a Hallmark holiday - worst performing nights on a restaurant calendar
