Looking for sublet/new apartment in Park Slope area

Hi – I’m Dan and a regular customer where I work recommended that I contact this message board. I have recently graduated from Syracuse University in Upstate NY with a degree in Fine Arts/Illustration. I am very interested in residing in Park Slope and would appreciate having the opportunity to discuss any affordable openings you may have in this area. Since July, I work full time at Gorilla Coffee at 97 5th Ave: http://www.gorillacoffee.com/

Anyway, I’m living in Bushwick and it is not the best situation. After closing shop at night - I take the a couple subways (not a problem) but then have 10 block walk to my apt and it can get sort of shady at night. Also, there are some issues with the apartment ie: sparking electrical sockets, water heater troubles, leaking ceilings, ect... Despite it's new/nice exterior there seems to be underlying problems that make it difficult to live in. I hope to relocate sooner than later to Park Slope. Hope the folks on this message board may have some suggestions. Thank you! [email protected]

Call me before 2PM as I work from 2-9 most nights. Or stop by the shop and we can discuss things in person.

  • Slope is pricy, so you should mention what you can afford.
    Bushwick is one of the shadiest areas in the city I ever step foot in, I prefer to never return

  • Subject: Some suggestions

    I live in CG and the way that people find apartments here is:

    1. Looking at postings in laundromats;
    2. Looking at postings at Met Foods;
    3. Making conversation with shopkeepers;
    4. Asking people who live in CG if they know of any apartments for rent.

    The landlord in Carroll Gardens like to keep things "in the family" so word of mouth is the best way to find an apartment here. I know someone who got an apartment because he and his girlfriend were buying bread in a local bakery and were making conversation with the guy behind the counter. Come to find out the guy behind the counter's mom was looking for a tenant and he thought they looked like a "nice couple".

    You may want to try these methods and/or put up a flyer in Gorrilla Coffee (if there's a place for that) saying you're looking and to "talk to the guy behind the counter" if anyone knows of anything.

    Good luck and let us know what you find!

  • As mentioned earlier, park slope is pricy. You might be better of getting a roomate to share the costs.

  • Yeah, it can be pricey, but my budget is between $600-$800 a month. I'm def. looking to have roommates too. Thanks so much for all your help so far.
  • There's this new awesome place to find roommates called craigslist!
  • Haha yeah, I've been checking it out with little results.
  • Well, for your budget you might try Sunset Park for a roomie!
  • That does look very promising. I emailed them a min. ago. Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate the support I've received here.
  • if you look in the 20's you'll find something...

    just take the R up to Union. Theres a load on craigslist you just have to email everyone and get a response or two that works out.
  • You could try word-of-mouth from behind the counter at Gorilla as well. A long time ago when I worked in a coffee shop, I was really chatty with regulars, and they helped me out more than once. Good luck with your search!
  • Yeah man, no way 800 will get you anything in park slope proper. But maybe sunset park/bay ridge. Both great areas and right on the r/m/d line
  • If you're cute, Scarlett will let you move in with her!
  • Scuse me? Beav! My rent is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than that and I don't like living with boys.

    But I do think it's possible to find something in PS for 800 as long as you're cool with a smaller room, a few roommates. Be patient!
  • You could find a place in Greenwood Heights, sometimes known as South Slope to realtors but you still would only get a share for that price. There was one on 18th st for 1825. Warning, they are crap. Usually they are small floor through walk-up apartments. I'm pretty sure that there is one available for 1600 in my building which I am moving out of. There are too many roaches, a dirty hallway and broken front door. To make matter worse, you have to go through a broker and pay a fee. Frankly, I had enough when my landlord raised my rent more than 10%. He's crazy.
  • There's a studio in my building - very reasonable. Won't break the bank. PM me for details.
