Anyone want to play soccer? — Brooklynian

Anyone want to play soccer?

sandra dee
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Hi everyone,
I would really love to get a game of soccer started up at the park on Sat or Sun afternoons. I am really terrible at the game but I have a lot of fun playing. I think a co-ed team would be fun and a good way to meet other people (hence the previously posted topic about meeting singles...), get out of the hosue, and get some good exercise. I would hope to be able to rally enough people to create 2 teams. This is not "serious" it would be for fun.
Also, does anyone have a soccer ball we could use? I would go buy one if no one has one already.

  • I'm in! except the wanting to meet local singles part

I used to play pick-up soccer every Saturday for years, but I've been intimidated by the games in Prospect Park. I have a (now sadly deflated but could be rehabilitated) ball to contribute.

    Ditto! Ditto.

I'm all up for the Park if its not too cold.

Apparently there is a group that plays indoors at the school on Atlantic and Adelphi on Thursday nights too. It costs $8. I just hear about it and am thinking of checking it out this week.
  • There is an abundance of pickup games in the park, all you have to do is keep wandering and you will find the co-ed soccer. If you are coming into the park from grand army stick to the left towards the end of the meadow.

My brother and I played with them and most were nice and fun but a couple were unbearably whiny or like contact only when it suited them.

I dont know if its going down in the middle of january.

do we think the weather is gonna be decent tho?
  • Subject: sounds fun

    I'd be in.

I'm new to the hood (and the board). It would be nice to meet some people and sprain an ankle or two.
  • Subject: SOCCER PLAN!

WOW! What a great response :D

Okay so it does look like there may be some gloomy weather this weekend, but its supposed to be warm - like in the 50's. If its not raining, there will be a tentative game planned for this Saturday 1/14/06 at 3pm. Who's in?

If it is raining, lets try for next Saturday 1/21/06 same time.

We will meet on the meadow right near the entrance where the Farmer's Market is held. I will be there with a soccer ball (so you can recognize me).

Please bring soccer balls too if you have them, I will go to tArget and get one tomorrow as well, thanks!
  • I can't make it this weekend, and may be out of the city next weekend.

Is the plan to just kick around with the people who show up, or are we going to try to join another game as a group?
  • Subject: Okay so it was raining last Saturday...

and I had gone out and bought a soccer ball on Friday night, a beautiful, silver, well-made (no child labor involved) soccer ball.
And now it is totally freezing out and would be pretty cold to play. I really want to make this happen, so please check back in again when it warms up a little. I just want it to be above freezing and not rainy to motivate to get on the field.
I have had a lot of positive responses from people I have been telling about this and it seems like it will be a great turn out when it actually happens, so stay tuned....

PS. Did anyone try out the indoor soccer game that someone posted about earlier?

    How many non-DHers you got?

I am not sure of the total, but maybe like 5-10 possibly. I have mentioned it to people in the PH neighborhood and have gotten positive responses. A couple friends from my work are interested as well because they have been looking for something like this for a while now.
  • i've heard some mention of certian people on this board wanting to be soccer cheerleaders... anyone opposed?

er. I love being a cheerleader. I'll bring rum punch. :)

oh. I don't jump. I just yell and tell you what you did wrong. so really, technically, I'm an irritating fan with booze. :)

In pickup soccer, the cheerleaders are called fullbacks.
  • Is this going down, whats the deets?
  • Subject: Soccer game TOMMOROW 3PM

    Hi Everyone,
Okay, so it sounds like its gonna be 55 degrees F and a "chance of rain" tomorrow (Sat. Jan 21st).
What that means to me is, time to get together and play soccer :0)

The logistics are the same as they were from last weekend:

    3pm
meet on meadow at Prospect Park (near Eastern Pkwy/Grand Army Plaza entrance)
Feel free to tell your friends about it

Most importantly, Be prepared to get beat down!

    See you on the field!

    ---Sandra Dee

    PS...Cheerleaders/Fullbacks more than welcome

PSS...If by the very unwanted chance it is raining (again) the game will be postponed until further notice. This means, if it is raining, I will not be there with my soccer ball
PSSS...Does anyone have an airpump they could bring along just in case?
  • Can I be a Daily Heights soccer hooligan?

    Hi Quijibo,
Sunday...I am not sure about...I haven't made any plans for that day.
We will be playing tomorrow (Saturday 1/21) at 3pm. If you read up a couple of threads the details are there. Hope to see you on the field if you can make it!
  • i have to be re-certified in CPR tomorrow... oh, how i will loath being indoors on such a day. next time!

    still here.

    so, did soccer happen?!
  • Hey!
It did happen and there were about 10-15?? soccer stars there. It was really really fun.
Many people were falling in the mud and I am very sore from banging into people, running, and falling down a couple times.
I will definitely do it again as long as the weather is above freezing and not raining.
I will keep you all posted for the next soccer game.
Thank you Jayce and Qtrain so much for coming and playing!!!!!!!!! Hope you come bring your smiling faces to the next game too. We need you out there!
  • Pain! The pain!

That was big fun; I'm up for playing anytime. Was it just me and jace from DH?
  • It truly was just the three of us from DH.

other people there were all pretty much from PHeights (one from PS and one from Ft. Greene).
One I had met at the farmer's market that day and invited to come play.
Two walked by and joined in, and one was from my work :0)

Hopefully more DH'ers will make it to the next game.

    and what time?

As long as weather is permitting, I am available to play on Sunday afternoon (my mom is coming in for the day on Saturday so I will be busy with her).
3pm works well for me if it does for everyone else.
I will post as we get closer to the date and know a better weather forecast more information for everyone.
But it is the same place as before (read the messages from before to find out details...)
