FIOS in the Slope?
Comments

We're all waiting im(patiently). Several threads on this already and nobody has offered any estimate
-
My hubby saw a Verizon FIOS truck parked on the 7th ave a few days ago. He got very excited, but I think the driver was just getting something in the local grocery shop...
When they are ready, I hope they run FIOS on 9th St. It's been so poorly and unnecessarily resurfaced, it deserves to be ruined! -
No time soon. I know someone that works for Verizon, and he says they're doing the outlying neighborhoods where the lines can be run above ground first. It will be at least 2010 at the earliest before it comes here.
-
The closest FIOS is being set up to the Slope now is in Gowanus. 3rd & 3rd to be specific.

3rd and 3rd IS the Slope, isn't it?

Only if you're a real estate agent.
-
ou'll know it's coming when they start tearing up the streets to bury the lines.
-
All of Staten Island is hooked up.

Their cables are above ground.
Mill Basin is also hooked up. -
I don't understand the big deal about FIOS. My parents have it up in Westchester and it's quite terrible. At least the cable part. The DVR/menus/cable box is absolutely horrible. Non-intuitive and slow and there's a bunch of channels they don't even get. The internet seems ok but isnt' really much faster that what my TWC connection.
-
Someone explain what FIOS is and why we are all excited for it to come...
-
It's supposedly much faster than cable modem and I am sick to death of dealing with the Evil Empire (aka Time Warner)

FIOS is Verizon's answer to Time Warner. Fiber optic cables which are *supposedly* faster than Time Warner. Most people are excited becasue it actually gives them an alternative to the vile Time Warner.
I probably won't switch because believe it or not, I've been pretty satisfied with Time Warner. And this comes from someone who switched to DirectTV while hating Time Warner and then had to switch back because only cable will work with Hi-def Tivo. -
And Verizon is not an evil empire???
I've actually also been pretty happy with TWC. In the 8 or so years I've been using them, my internet has been down maybe two or three times - which isn't so bad. And they usually fixed it pretty quickly. Also been pretty satisfied with the speed as well as the cable TV service. -
Time warner has just introduced Roadrunner turbo with speed approaching FIOS for an extra $9.95/mo
-
2010. This from a Verizon installer and heard at some sort of Verizon employee meeting. PS is to be the last NYC neighborhood.
-
Has anyone heard anything new in this regard? It's been about a year since the last post.
-
Keep waiting. This alternative version of cable television isn't coming any time soon. Don't worry. You'll know soon enough when it's available - then you can get a deep discount on Time Warner service if you even hint you're going for phone company tv.

I'm over at 7st and 4th ave and we have it in our building.
from what the tech told me,below 4th ave and north of 7st is hooked up.
the lines need to be run and also the colo must be upgraded.
I had TWC and Verizon FIOS up for testing:
2.1 Mb/s for TWC /w Turbo.
3.1 Mb/s for FIOS. -

I have roadrunner "turbo."
Enjoy your max 86 kb/s upload speeds. On a good day, in clear weather, and no bittorrenting leeches. I work from home, it's abominable.
Download is ok at 2 Mb / s - decent enough, and it can stream HD from netflix, but still not nearly as fast as it could be. -

sorry for the double post, but does that mean it's available on 10th btwn 3rd and 4th? they've completely destroyed the road over here anyway, with that shitty construction on the 9th st F track

seriously? i have plain Road Runner and i have steady 10Mb down .5Mb up during the day... on evenings (like now) it dips to 8 or 9Mb down... i'm in south slope, however
if you're having such horrible speeds, complain like crazy... my friend in Willyburg complained for several months until they replaced nearly every cable and splitter in his building and put him on a new node... now he gets more than 14Mb down -
North Slope here:

However, while on the topic of Time Warner, does anyone know what channels you get if you cancel cable, keep internet, and just plug the cable directly into the television? I seem to remember all the normal channels come in HD, as well as TBS, and maybe a couple of others. Thinking of canceling cable service, but want to know what I'd have left.[/code] -
