Best Mexican Bakery on 5th?
I tried Luigi's for the first time after reading the thread about it here. Pretty damn good pizza - esp the fresh mozz pie. Anyway, while they were heating it up, I checked out the Mexican bakery next door. I always see so many Mexican bakeries along 5th, going all the way down to Sunset Park. Does anyone have any secrets as to the best of them? I'm into anything - breads, sweets, etc. I esp love flan and want to try a good Tres Leches cake. Next door to Luigi's I got a flan and some kind of sweet roll for $2.50! Flan was OK - not the greatest. Roll was good, but kind of cold.

Frankly, Mexican breads and pastries can be pretty bad.
Now I do remember when Lopez was on 5th and the corner of 8th street and they were doing mainly wholesale but retail and open 24/7 because they baked all the time. My son was a teeen at the time and no kidding he knew when those delicious breads were made and muffins and would go out at 3am (or was he jjust coming home) and buy cranberry muffins or something that had just come out of the oven. I know they are still in the hood but even that exceptional bakery fell in quality. Where are they anyway? I know they are still in the hood. -
I've been to Lopez and their breads / pastries are not particularly Mexican. I got some crispy Angel Wings (Palmiers) which is a French pastry, if I'm not mistaken. The Wings were fresh and tasty but the sweet rolls were awful.

Lopez Bakery on 5th and 19th or so is the best! I would stay away from anything with fruit and certain cookies but their breads and this one pastry I get that they call a nest is excellent. Also really good chocolate cake.

Their sourdough loaf is perfect and less than $2. Their sweets...not so much.

I agree mostly about their sweets. Their cheesecake is good if you get the one without fruit and their chocolate cakes are excellent. i sent a friend of mine in there because he was looking for a birthday cake and he ended up buying one of their cannolis, NOT a good idea!
