I'm in heaven!
Subject: I'm in heaven!
5th Avenue near 3rd Street is really hopping with new stores! not only is there a great Italian place around the corner (Primo Atto=love), but, now we have a wine store, the newly re-opened A&S pork Store (now called M&S I believe) and of course, the wonderful S'nice. But, just this weekend I see opening in the old children's store will be a pet store (though, I wish they were putting up a nicer awning)! All things I love and use right near me-yeah!

Am I the only one not stoked by that wine store? I found the staff to be kind of snooty and the selection to be overpriced (maybe I'm just spoiled by slope cellars..) I'm not thrilled with them or Prospect Wineshop, where i've received some pretty terrible service. I still hike to Slope Cellars but now with it getting slushy I wish there was something closer.

i'm surprised to hear you say primo atto is a hit.
i can't STAND sotto vocce or apertivo (the other two owned by the same person) but will have to give the new place a shot.
you really "love" it??!
and yes, lots of great new shops on 5th. i've noticed that also. i also saw that a nail salon is opening right next to s'nice. doesn't really do it for me personally, but i do love to see empty storefronts rented and occupied...! the new m&s was really busy when i walked by on saturday. was happy to see it. -

Primo Atto is quite good -- and is not owned by the Sotto Voce crew. You may be thinking of the other new restaurant on 5th ave. between 2nd and 3rd sts -- I think it's called Alta Voce. Primo Atto is on the corner of 5th ave. and 4th sts -- formerly Cocotte.

Primo Atto is NOT, I repeat, NOT owned by the same people as Sotto Voce, Apertivo and that other place that they just opened (which happens to be on 5th Avenue between 3rd & 2nd Street while Primo Atto is on the corner of 4th Street 7 5th Avenue)! I hate Sotto Voce and won't go near their other places (the food is horrible at Sotto Voce as is the service, I don't understand why the place is always so crowded!)

Primo Atto is owned by 2 men who are in no way related in the least bit with Sotto Voce, I know the owners, I have eaten there quite a few times already and know for a fact they have nothing to do with Sotto Voce!
As for the wine store, I am stoked that there is one as close to me is that one. i agree with you, their price point is a tad high and their selection is small. but, I have found a couple of wines there that I like and since they are right around the corner, i will go in there sometimes, it is convenient. I still do the bulk of my wine shopping at Red, White and Bubbly though. -

I agree, I always find stuff I like in there and I don't even mind a higher price point but I dont think thats actually what it is- they carry wines that Cellars carries but they charge $3 more for them. I don't mind paying more for something that deserves it, but just hiking up prices to pay rent is a bit irritating (I also find the Prospect is more pricey than Cellars for the same bottles. TJs in the city still reigns supreme.) I feel so cheap when I bitch about paying more for wine but I'm actually not even picky about price, I just can't make sense of seeing the exact same bottle for $9.99, $11.99 and $12.99 at three different stores within 15 blocks of eachother.

They are a bit pricey but I've always been made to feel really welcomed by the staff (they gave me free cookies on Halloween even). -

for the most consistent cheap prices (although don't expect any service), I find Bay River on 5th btw 14th/15th a pretty good bet. Of course, TJs rules, and if I want service, I go to Slope Cellars or Shawns -
If I know what I want, I will go to the place across from 5th Avenue Key food, I find their prices to be the cheapest. but, they know nada about wine or most liquors.
