SODA review in Citysearch
hey, i'm relatively new to the neighborhood (moved here in september) and still getting a feel for what it has to offer. everyone around here seems to like SODA a lot. i googled it and found a review on Citysearch from last summer. Any truth to this? Did the guy just have a bad experience?
"What the eff happened?

I used to love Soda, but they must have changed owners. The nice bartender is gone, and has been replaced by some guy who gladly serves every girl wearing a tight, hot pink shirt with "Juicy" written on it in sequins, but will pass over everyone else. The waitresses are so inept and mean that it's actually pretty entertaining. Plus you can save some money since you don't have to tip them. But going somewhere else is an even better idea.
Pros: Garden
Cons: Bartender, Waitresses, Service
Overall user rating: Not Recommended"

I never believe the reviews in Citysearch. The only people who bother to post are those with a gripe, and most of my favorite places have a rant or two posted about them.
-
I strongly believe there is truth to this. I have tried time and time again to go there out of convenience because I live so close, but more often than not it winds up winning the gold medal for SUCKING.
beyond the standard inattentive bartender shit (which happens more often than not in most places) here are my complaints three:
1. They pull a bait and switch.
Let's establish this fact: I like cheap beer. I just do. Budweiser, Pabst, Schaeffer, Rheingold, whathaveyou??? I like it. So, Soda seems accomodating in that they have bottles of bud or cans of rheingold for $3 (or they did, last time I tried). Anyway, I have been there three times when they sold me ONE bottle or can of said beer and on my second trip to the bar they were mysteriously out of them, meaning I had to buy a more expensive drink. That's fine, and I understand it happens sometimes, but I don't buy the coincidence. And even if they ARENT purposely gouging, at the very least they run a poorly stocked bar.
2. They have inconsistent pricing.
On a multitude of occaisions, the price of beer (usually draft beer, after my complaint from point one has happened) has ranged plus or minus a dollar between trips to the bar. Brooklyn Lager is either $4, $5, or $6.....but it is NOT all three. Extremely lame.
3. They are utterly incompetent.
Once last summer, my girlfriend ordered a margarita. OF COURSE, it took forever to make it, and get it to our table, but beyond that they made it somehow using ORANGE JUICE!!! And the ultimate kicker to this tale of stupidity is that when she sent it back for a replacement, they made her one with SPRITE. Nice call, genius.
Maybe it has gone under new ownership? I don't know. I havent been in about 8 months. I don't know if one could fault the owner, though, when the problem was clearly with the bartenders. They still there?
The tack-on gripe i'll add to the end of this is that stupid stupid lounge thing they put in the addition. Call me crazy, but I like to go to the bar to drink and socialize, and NOT watch a bunch of douchebags dry-humping to Mazzy Star. What's wrong with regualr tables and juke-box music like the front half of the bar? Pool table, maybe? Pinball? Anyone???? -
I only go there in the summer because I like sitting outside. Otherwise it's not worth it at all.
-
The service is pretty poor- it can be excruciatingly slow...
-
I'm not a fan of going there on the weekends at all for a lot of the reasons listed above.
-
only been there a few times but thought it was cool, don't go out to too many bars but there I had good food, good service and thought they played cool music. seems aight to this kid... 8)

as a frequent soda dj, i must admit, ive neither seen dry-humping nor heard mazzy star there, ever.

The douchebags are undeniable!

that goes for just about every bar in nyc, though. -
allright.....in fairness the dry-humping was only witnessed once, but the overly chill music seemed to be a recurring theme. It was like they added a lullaby room to the bar.
but really, the lounge thing was just an annoyance. The first three are what I actually care about. -

How would one get a gig DJing there? would love to do an occasional night. what kind of setup do they have? and for the record, watching dryhumping douche bags would be a dream come true for this kid

when were you there again? lately, theyve been making us turn down the tunes because theyve been getting noise complaints.
ill be spinning the 4th. come by if youd like to hear some non-lullaby tunes. ill treat you to a bottle of bud or something 8) -

I might take you up on that. It's been at least 7 or 8 months since i've been, and it's about time to do a check in and see if I still find it to be bad news.
I keep trying to like it, but keep coming up with bad results. -

yeah, i used to not be a big fan. the screaming drunk college girls, the delays with the waitresses, the cokeheads instigating riots around the pool-table. but their clientele has been changing (for the better lately), they got rid of the pool table, and i realized that service was slow only cause they only bother scheduling one waitress for each room, for economy, i guess.
its still a good neighborhood bar, if you ask me. the tons of regulars, the djs and the booze keep me going back.
also: killer veggie burgers. -

according to waiterrant, it's also organic. -
but is it fairly traded?
for what it's worth, i haven't had any of the problems listed above at soda. well, a friend of mine did get a margarita once, and it was pretty lousy, but in that made-with-whiskey-sour-mix way, not in an orange juice or sprite way. and i've had a couple of weird and/or inattentive waitresses, but only once or twice.
then again, i am always sure to wear my "juicy" shirt.
just kidding. -

there are certain drinks at soda that can only be mixed properly by certain people. sad but true. next time, as sara rose for a key lime pie on ice. delish.
