Mantl wall / tv wall mount question

I live in park slope on 6th ave and have a mantel in the bedroom with no actual fireplace. its like a little book shelve below the mantel. Anyhow. I can not figure out what that wall is made of and if I can install a TV wall mount for a 46 inch flat screen. Anyhow have any idea what type of material that wall would be made from. it feels very cold and a nail only goes into it out 1 inch then stops. Also, Anyhow who who to hire to do this wall mount if its possible?

Probably Brick.

I put mine in but only because of dumb luck that the screws that came with the wall mount were the same size as a bit extender on my drill. Even with that drilling 6" into brick was a royal pain in the ass.

I mounted mine above a non-working fireplace which had brick underneath. It requires a special drill bit to install. I hired a place who was insured to install mine.

Drilling into brick usually requires a masonry bit, which you can get most decent hardware stores, for a few bucks. After you drill into the brick you need to install anchors, b/c screws won't hold directly in brick.

If you haven't purchased a mount yet, take a look at www.monoprice.com I used one of their ~$30 mounts on a 46" screen and it's been flawless. The mounts from Best Buy. etc, are all a big rip-off. Monoprice is also a great place to buy HDMI cables at a fraction of the price of Best Buy, RadioShack, etc.
