AMORINO - Good "fancy" pizza on Vanderbilt b/w park and prospect

PENAS GROCERY - Completely whipass bodega on Vanderbilt @ St. Marks. Preferable to getting beer at Soda, the bar across the street.

TAVERN ON DEAN is allright, allthough I've always though it should be a little less expensive. Also GARDEN CAFE, i've heard, is like one of the best restaraunts in the entire area (including neighboring hoods), but i've never been.

Subject: PH Kicks ass...

My favorite things bout PH, in no particular order;

Toms Restaurant, Say what you will about the food, the people there are so fast, friendly and cool, and how can you go wrong with a x-mas light/ rose/ apple/ fall leaf tree in the middle of the restaurant? and waffles with eggs n fried salami? awsome

Prospect park/ grand army plaza. if you can go on a weekday when there are few people arround it's possibly the best place for solitude in nyc.

Beautifull brownstones, I love the walk from washington ave to flatbush. I always see some architechitural detail I've missed before.

Brooklyn Museum, 1st saturdays kick ass and they have world class exhibitions, and it's got that cool fountian out front with the jumping water.

Washington ave Religious store and all the caribean flava this neighbor hood has. any neighbor hood with it's own voo-doo store and who knows how many places selling curried goat can't be TOO gentrified yet. to me it's just right.

which brings me to the best thing, cheap rent yet relative safety. and relative cleanlyness. After living in Mott Haven South Bronx and a sketchy hood in SE Williamsburg this neighborhood kicks ass.

oh yeah, I really dig the new Murals on Washington ave too.

Go to Tom's on a weekday for pancakes, chili and spinach-feta omlettes.

Transportation- multiple subway lines, minutes away from MH, should you need/choose to go there... it's hard to go somewhere in MH that requires more than 2 transfers.

To be honest, we chose PH because of transportation and just lucked into everything else. I commute two days a week to Rutgers. Yup, Rutgers in New Brunswick. The commute takes about 1:20 minutes. We tried to do Hoboken to split the difference for my City worker wife. A test run of the commute from the only part of Hoboken we could afford (way up on Washington) was nearly 2 hours with seamless transfers. Hell, I take the Q/B to Herald Sq and walk to Penn Station and it still clocks in under 1:30 minutes.

my top five, in no particular order:

El Gran Castillo de Jagua! My newest "discovery," new favorite eating place, and home of the famed CARNEVIENTO.

Prospect Park on a sunny afternoon. Several miles around and perfect for running, biking, soccer, hearing concerts, or just generally chilling out.

The 24-hour LAUNDRY KING at...well...Grand St. and...I don't know the cross street. 24 hour laundry at its friendliest (there's always the same guy working there when I'm there, and he's awesome)

The basil seed drink from the Bengali bodega on Washington st. at Bergen. For $1 you get a honey-flavored, thick, sweet beverage with pseudo-tapioca balls in it. YUM.

The fountain at the Brooklyn Museum. Free wireless, cool spray, entrancing fountain, hilarious children.

Proximity to Prospect Park
The main branch of the Brookly Public Library
Very convenient to public transportation
Beautiful buildings and tree-lined blocks
Ferment Grapes (wine shop)

1. the actual neighborhood aspect - I have so many friends (real friends, not b.s. "oh hey" friends) that I didn't have before moving here. it's really lovely. and yes, many of them are pre-(myinvolvementwith)-DH. and many are post-DH.

2. soda. my living room. wait, I'm not kidding. I love that joint.

3. my apartment. where I live and entertain. I love this space.

4. the number of delivery options. I lived in harlem previously. I could get dominos and an upper west side sushi/chinese place delivered. for 3 years. gross. now, in addition to FD, I have tons of options that will deliver to my home. this makes me feel more like I live in NYC than I ever did in Harlem.

5. oh right, the rest of the nabe. nice restaurants (aliseo, garden cafe, le gamin, gen), nice and/or fun bars (soda, sepia, indigo), and fantastic culture (museum, botanic garden, kurdish museum, botanicas).

And the Number 1 do/see/eat/experience/etc in Prospect Heights is . . .

OK here is where I show what a newbie I am. Where and when are the DH Happy Hour(s)? By DH I assume you mean Daily Heights ( this message board right?)

#. Prospect Park and its little sibling, Mt. Prospect Park (steps and ramp between the BBG and the Library). The lungs of the neighborhood! Wait til summer time and watch it come alive. BBQs, softball, the bandshell, everything. I've made some really close friends just by owning and walking a dog every day. Also, the farmer's market at GAP on Saturday mornings is an absolute must for me all summer long.

#. Geido. The flame war rages on in other threads, but I've been going for five years and I love it. Sit at the bar.

#. Sepia. My other living room. Well, compared to my back yard for half the year.

#. My back yard. Although I'm somewhat alarmed by the amount of new grass that has already sprouted.

#. Della at the laundromat on Vanderbilt at Sterling, next to the school parking lot. She's the grandmother to the entire neighborhood AFAICT. And that place is always, always just immaculately clean.


Extra bonus post:

#. Natural Land aka Sea Land on Flatbush (yeah, fine, wrong side to be ProHe, shaddup). Nice fresh organic produce, 24/7.

I just found this thread, so I thought I would check in.
1) The Islands - [Washington between EP and Lincoln] There is a lot of Carribean food in the neighborhood but everything is a distant second.

2) Ripple - [Washington between St. John's and Sterling] If and when it reopens (Syron, what's the deal? [As if Syron is on the message boards. Dude doesn't have email.]), Ripple is my favorite bar in the neighborhood. Even without heat in the winter. Very chill.

3) Freddy's - [Corner of Dean and 6th] A great neighborhood DRINKING bar. Also the backroom has eclectic and fun events, films, comedy and - for the knitting inclined - Knit Nite. Epicenter of the opposition to Ratner. I perform in the Monday night comedy show once in a while and, on behalf of all the comics that perform there, would love to see everyone there on the first and third Mondays of the month. freddysbackroom.com

4) Christie's [Flatbush and Sterling] - Yes, it is on the PS side. But it is better than LMM on Park, which is in PH. It is worth crossing the street for the best Jamaican patties. I prefer beef patties to any other, but Christie's veg patties are the best I've ever had. [NB: Technically, the Museum, the Library and the Park are all outside the borders of PH, so let's consider things in proximity to be "advantages of the neighborhood]

5) Access to transportation. The Q/B at 7th; the 2/3 at EP, GAP and Bergen; the 4/5/2/3 at Franklin (and the underappreciated S, which connects to the A/C, and therefore JFK). Plus I see buses even if I don't use them.
