anyone have trouble with time warner cable reception?
I moved recently to Park Slope/Greenwood Heights and my Time Warner cable reception on my tube TV has been really bad -- the TV sound crackles so loudly I have to turn it off. There are also stripes across the picture. Is this Time Warner or is it my TV? The problems only started after I moved here from out-of-state. The TV worked fine with Comcast before -- although I have a second flat screen in the bedroom with the same service that hasn't had any problems.

It is Time Warner and it is also quite normal.
Stay on their customer support line for about 45 minutes and then you can tell them the issue you are having. They will tell you to go to one of their centers and pick up a new cable box. After about 2 months this problem will manifest itself again.
Verizon FIOS is not available in most of Park Slope, so really there is no alternative.
Welcome to the neighborhood. -
Yah. TW sucks monkey balls.
That said, they are having a 2 month free offer to upgrade internet access from 10mb to 15mb (downstream). It's called Turbo, and it costs $10 after the free trial.
Since my work pays for internet, I just turned it on tonight. We'll see. Usually my access tests fairly fast, but I'm having problems with my Vonage phone and it might be due to bandwidth.
FIOS can't get here soon enough for me. -

If you have one TV with good reception and one with bad, it's most likely the connection on the TV with bad reception. Not necessarly Time Warner's fault. Might also be the TV. Tube TVs do die eventually. Check all connections on the bad TV, then call evil TWC. -
It could just be that you need a new box. When I moved from Manhattan in to Brooklyn, I tried to use my same cable box and the signal was totally fucked up and some channels didn't come in at all. Turned out I needed a new "Brooklyn" box. Makes no sense to me but that's what fixed it.

Are you by chance feeding the signal thru a VCR? I had the same problem you describe, crackling sound, or more like a buzzing sound, and red stripes across the picture. Turns out my problem was caused by feeding the signal through a VCR with a tuner that was shot to hell. I got rid of the VCR and replaced it with DVR. The picture and sound are fixed. If you are not feeding it through a VCR, chances are you need a new box as someone else described. Maybe your current box has a shot tuner. -
thanks so much for all the tips -- i switched the boxes on my two TVs, and now the problems are on the other one. time warner is coming with a new box sunday...

glad to hear you have found the problem. As an FYI, if you have transportation and don't feel like waiting until Sunday, they have an office on 5th ave (near 25th st) and you can walk in and swap out the box. I plan on going in soon to get my HDTV boxes as I just bought a new TV -
That office near the graveyard is awful. I got an HD box from them and it was super glitchy. You're better off having them bring you one or going to the 23rd street office IMO.

I've gone there several times over the past 10+ years with no problem. For me, it beats waiting at home for 4 hours until they come. Also, I've had them miss many appointments (and lie about it afterwards), so I just drive down and do it myself
