I'm shocked! I asked a guy to build a set of French doors in my place, tearing a hole into a wall for the doors and filling in the old door. He said he can do it for $4,000!

Um -- that's a huge amount of money. Granted, he'll have to move some outlets and a lightswitch, but isn't four grand a little high? Have any of you had work done like this and how does the price sound to you?

    I might have someone who can do that for a cheaper price.

    My family used him when we renovated an apt building in parkslope for the new rentals.

    $4,000 doesn't seem bad.It ain't as simple as you make it sound. You've got some electrical work there so you might need an electrician and then there is carting away the debris. You could easily spend $1,000 on the doors alone

    When ever you get a bid like this get the person to tell you what they do and explain/justify the price

    I couldn't agree more. With every click and keystoke the wealth of information on this board grows.

    My only fear is that someday brooklynian.com won't be content to simply be... it will take its knowledge, knowledge which no single man could ever posses, and use it for bad rather then... rather then... uh, rather then..

    ..well, rather than complaining about condoms in the soup at blue ribbon, or the noise outside Union Hall, or parking tickets, bumper dents, flipsters sucking, bills or some other such notice that needs to be taken notice of.

    Agreed. When the sum is bigger than the parts. When posting is mandatory. When finally the pecker drags instead of the knuckles.
