It's French!
Subject: It's French!
I'm shocked! I asked a guy to build a set of French doors in my place, tearing a hole into a wall for the doors and filling in the old door. He said he can do it for $4,000!Um -- that's a huge amount of money. Granted, he'll have to move some outlets and a lightswitch, but isn't four grand a little high? Have any of you had work done like this and how does the price sound to you?

Let's see: off the rack french doors at HD $800 to $1000. Assorted studs and sheet rock, screws, compound, tape around 150, lock set to your liking 50 to 75. New electric, BX etc., 100. Pick up and delivery of material, one day. Trying to park or even double park except for the unused bike lane running in front of your house. What floor are you on? What else. Oh demolition removal and clean up one day plus paying somebody to take the stuff. He's working by himself, I presume. The likelihood that the electric will require something extra because of the age. Are we matching molding? Maybe hiring a good plaster guy cheap would be 200 to 300 for a day. How about time? I'm sure you want it done post haste.
Filing ACP 5, 200 to 300. 1M/2M liability, WC, 300 to 400 a month. contractors license from the city plus bond 100 to 200 per month. If you live in a coop or condo all of these would be required, if you are renting, your LL would want to see all of these. If you own the house you are being irresponsible in not getting all of the above.
I don't know, some people might consider 4K a steal. -
+1 Modsquad. It's a deal if he's doing it the right way.

Screw HD.
Lowes has better French Doors for better prices
I think they have a nice pair of wooden french doors with smoked glass similar to this
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=30989-74391-30989&lpage=none (not white though) for around $400.
You just need to look in the store for them. The Lowes and HD sites suck imo.
Also, they are already framed (if thats the correct word) -

What's the point of French doors that are 48". For 4K I would think you would want a full 5 feet or more. Not that I want to defend HD but do you really think there's a world of difference between them and Lowe's?
The likeihood of being able to install "prehung" french doors in the sloping floor of a typical Brownstone without major pain and tears is impossible.
Furthermore hitokiri don't you think smoked glass is kind of 70's?

And good luck getting that frame to be the exact width of the wall.

I was being facetious in my posts, but you can save money with this job. Go to HD (or Lowe's) and pick out the doors yourself or for that matter if the guy you hired is willing to give you a list get the that stuff yourself. He is a skilled laborer and will charge you skilled laborer rates to go shopping. I've never had a problem slipping HD (or Lowe's) delivery guys 20 or 40 bucks to bring the stuff inside. Let him do the demo but you dispose of the debris. It's a big pain in the ass to get rid of the stuff. You can usually find a dumpster and pay somebody 20 bucks to add your stuff or the city will pick up construction debris that is neatly packed and not put out on a weekly basis.
Unless you're a currency trader in which case you deserve to be charged up the wazoo! :P -
you can also get doors from Brownstoner.
or Demolition Depot in Harlem....
