  • Now I'm confused. Does anyone know who actually designed this stupid building? Is there a drawing of it somewhere? Is anyone an architect with hook-ups in this joint?

Note: and by stupid I mean insanely expensive.

The architect is Richard Meier, same guy who did those glass towers in the West Village...and other stuff. He's supposedly a big time starchitect.
  • Others are posting that the building permit lists Stephen B. Jacobs Group as the architect, which could mean another 53 Boerum place:

That's what that building looks like? Ewww.
  • Nothing on the Richard Meier group's website about the project, which may or may not be a good thing. Check out www.richardmeier.com for pictures of his stuff- it seems like his recent residential work has moved towards big, uninteresting looking glass boxes that are cooler from the inside than from the outside. Also, just for chuckles, check out his ridiculous proposal for the WTC site.

He also designed the Getty Museum in LA. There are some pictures on the website, but they don't really do justice to how silly the building is. A lot of it is Getty's fault since the building was, in large part, his idea, but the building is this like weird modern replica of some Roman villa or something. They basically decided to base the building on the villa, but then didn't really have nearly enough details about the original building and it ended up looking pretty absurd.
  • i think it's odd they have not posted a drawing of the completed project on the wall outside. meier's style of buildings would seem completely out of character for this neighborhood, just as they are in the w. village. so maybe they have gone with the boerum pl. group.

I was wondering if that was him. I didn't think it looked too bad, but I would like to see the original drawings.

Its wierd--since I read The Fountainhead recently, there has been moderism in the air. Between This Old House and this new building...spooky

Howard Roark would hate Richard Meier
  • From today's/yesterday's daily news:

"The most glamorous Prospect Heights project to get going ahead of Ratner's is a tower that Meier has designed for Mario Procida — who made a name for himself by building affordable housing in the Bronx — and his partners, developer Louis Greco and Las Vegas mall maven Sheldon Gordon.

Procida told Your Money that the glass building will be 15 stories, with 114 apartments. He had tried to get city permission to build 30 stories high.

He's just starting excavation at his 1 Eastern Parkway site. He expects construction to take 24 months.

Meier has generated a big buzz with a trio of luxury condo buildings on the West Village waterfront — along with lots of talk about leaky apartments. Procida vowed that 1 Prospect Park will not leak.

"We think the design kinks have been worked out," Procida said. "We tested our facade."

So will he get more than $1,000 per square foot for the condos, as bloggers are speculating — and put Prospect Heights prices in a whole new league?

    "We will," Procida predicted. "

"Arena nabe is jumpin'!" made me throw up a little in my mouth.
  • Any drawings of what this place is going to look like? Not that I have anything against buildings with a glass facade, but I think that it'll look more than a little out-of-place next to an old-world arch...
  • This is in the real deal today:

With his Lower Manhattan projects complete, Meier is turning to Brooklyn. One Prospect Park will be a 15-story glass tower with 119 condos, located along Plaza Street and Eastern Parkway facing Grand Army Plaza and overlooking Prospect Park. It's scheduled to be completed in summer 2008.

Until now, the price of living in a glass project designed by Meier was reserved for the very rich. Not so with the Prospect Heights project. "What we're doing in Brooklyn is not a luxury building," he said. "It is all glass, which may seem luxurious, but it is not out of the realm as far as what is economically feasible as far as construction costs."

  • We also got quoted in the Daily News today. A reporter named Lise wrote about PH being a "jumpin'" neighborhood and how "bloggers were speculating" about 1 Plaza Street condos going for $1000 per square foot.

The irony being that we weren't doing the speculating - the $1000 figure was what Meier's people told the Daily News like 9 months ago!! (I think it was the Daily News - I can't find the article anymore)
