Fractured my hand/finger
Based on previous posts, was going to go to NYU Hosp. for Joint Diseases. 2 questions:
1. Is this place infinitely better than LICH (which, obviously, is much closer)?
2. May have to delay hosp. trip for about 6 hours. Is a delay of this length going to severely affect the healing process, does anyone know?

Crap. I can't help you but I hope you feel better soon! I hope you at least have a good story to tell...
-
Good Lord! I usually do advice on evictions and noisy neighbors but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night (or did I?) . I've been to LICH twice, once for knee surgery and once for a broken nose and major lacerations and had great help both times. The nose job was so good I never needed plastic surgery. The delay or "Golden Hour" is usually associated with trauma like Stroke or Heart Attack. Obviously the sooner the better but I see no harm in waiting a while. Where do I send my bill?

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the sympathy and info. Yes, I have a story (not sure if it's good). A guy in Manhattan threw me to the ground so he could take my cab (and, yes, it was "my" cab). I landed on my hand. Bizarre and scary, yes, but I was on the ground in the street with oncoming traffic - it could have been much worse.
I'm going to take some more Advil and give LICH a try. Thanks, again, for taking the time. Happy 2009! -
damn that sucks.. and having this happened to me a few times. no it doesnt effect the healing process.(im 100% sure of this). things that work for sure soaking the hand in epson salt for a while and ice (if u have alot of pain)
LICH is good and definetly way closer than nyu..
wow --- id punch that guy in the face on your account . and all for a damn taxi cab.. your still a woman.. i HATE men like that ..but anyway .. get well soon -
Some assholes stole a cab out from under us last night. Then another group tried to do it again and we told them not to even think about it because we were not going to let it happen twice and they better step off and go somewhere else because they were sure to lose. They finally left....but jeez, what an asshole to push you down.
I may have broken my toe last night (it's very swollen, discolored and sore), but it was because I skidded across a wood floor in tights (by accident) and crashed in to the baseboard. Ouch -
FLexi - Good for you for standing your ground! Hope your toe is okay and that you were dancing up a storm and having a great time when it happened. Wish you had been my posse when I met my cab stealer last night!
Thanks, Ian, for the advice and for taking umbrage on my behalf. ;-) I've never had a stranger want to punch a guy in the face on my behalf. It feels oddly comforting. ;-) -
Oh, we were pissed. It was a stare-down, but we were not giving up. We didn't even talk about it - both of us were exactly on the same page - we just told them no way, no how....We were there first and it just was NOT going to happen. They finally slinked away and tried somewhere else....
I hope your hand is better. Personally, I"d go to NYU if I had the luxury of not having to be rushed in an ambulance.
No, I wasn't dancing. Got up to go to the bathroom. That was it ... -
Have you had a good experience with NYU (or a bad one withLICH)?
-
I have had friends who have gone to LICH and were very uncomfortable in the ER because there were prisoners in the waiting room (jail down the road) and they were being harassed.
I know the chief of NYU downtown, so I trust when he tells me that I should go there....I don't know anything about the joint disease one -
Still waiting for my insurance company to give me the all clear before I can go. Sigh.
-
Holy SHIT! What a fucker! Who the hell does that? Thankfully, you're not hurt worse.
-
whats the update over there Danielle? did you figure out what hosp yet ? and did the swelling go down?

Subject: Just got back
Just got back - was there for about 3 hours. Typing with 1 hand so excuse typos.
Fractured finger; in a splint thingy; possible surgery. Will know more when I have follow-up appt. with orthopoedic surgeon hopefully next week. Pissed at that guy as the only surgery I've ever had in my life was 4 wisdom teeth removal.
Went 2 NYU Joint place named previously. Couldn't have had a better experience (except if I hadn"t gone at all). In short;
-no waiting
-super-nice staff (smart, too -knew all about current events - the latest Madoff developments - which we chatted about)
-doctor was very young (didn't even look old enough 2 b dr. but knew her stuff, and gained my confidence; had great bedside manner; we even discussed recent movies we had seen like we were girlfriends)
-respect and camaraderie betw. drs. and staff
-everyone fine about being there on NYD
-would recommend them 2 anyone in a heartbeat.
Dr. had to make sure splint had finger in correct position 2 heal and we had 2 do twice, so 3 sets of xrays and 2 splints which is why it took awhile.
Now if anyone can give me tips on using scissors with my left hand (just sawed through a food package with serrated knife), I wd greatly appreciate it! -
Swelling continuing 2 grow. dr says it will continue for a day or 2.
-
glad they took good care of you. sorry to hear about the surgery.
Did anybody witness this asshole stealing your cab? Did anybody help you?
where is this hospital? -
yeah NYU is usually the best with service and in terms of being on top of things IE current events and young staff that are very nice & friendly. i just it was just a nightmare for parking thats my only gripe.. where as i can walk to LICH or Bklyn Hosp.
working with the left hand takes some getting used to i learned as a child so its A O K for me. but use smaller scissors to cut open things way easier to manage and control
and yeah any body see what happened and you were alone im guessing -

Subject: 3 witnesses
3 witnesses that I saw, including a big guy - no one helped. Took a photo of the big guy and told him I was going to post it on the web for him being a passive a-hole. (He could have at least yelled, "Hey!")
Should have told my insurance co. that I fell without mentioning the guy who attacked me. They will probably hound me to try to find him so they can get reimbursed.
Yes, alone leaving a friend's low-key, small but fun house party. (Though not fun enough to have surgery for!) I hope others returned home from NYE relatively unscathed. Thanks for all the sympathy and info. -
so whats the update over there D.
ah you should post the photo of that big ass wimp who saw this happen and did nothing. least if he yelled that might have been a lame attempt but damn doing nothing. -
ugh, hope you feel better. keep your hand elevated to reduce the swell. i just broke both of my wrists couple of months ago, ANd a toe 4 months ago. talking about bad luck. my right wrist hasnt fully recovered yet either. you'll get used to using left hand after a while.
i know a nice and friendly hand therapist that i went to for my therapy, metrosportmed.com, located next to new york methodist in park slope, her name is jenny shulman.
hope you feel better. -
Update: Went to Associate Chief, Division of Hand Surgery, Dr. Steve Lee (affiliated with NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases) yesterday. (212) 598-6697. He says surgery not needed (yea!). Again, everyone from the receptionist to Dr. Lee's assistant to Dr. Lee, himself, were terrific and super-nice. (I even did a little business networking with the doctor.)
Unfortunately, I'm off to the neurologist tomorrow as they think I have a concussion from hitting my head on the pavement. Ugh!
Thanks, KN. I will keep Jenny in mind. Good luck with right wrist! -
Danielle so are you finally all right back to normal?
-
See post tonight - went for my final appt. with Dr. Lee. Waited 2 hours and finally left. Ugh.
Howdy, Stranger!
