  • why dont you goto home depot at 585 DeKalb Ave
  • Sure - you have (in my favorite order)

    Lowes - 2nd Ave and 9th Street
Modern Lumber - 4th Ave and St. Marks
Another lumber yard on 8th St. bet. 3 and 2 Ave (the name escapes me now)
Home Depot (Hamilton and 16th Street).

PS - How many do you need. We are finishing up on a renovation and have some wood left over.
  • If you have a car, there are 2 Home Depots relatively nearby.

    Bedford Stuyvesant
    585 Dekalb Ave
    Brooklyn, NY 11205
    (718)230-0833

    550 Hamilton Ave
    Brooklyn, NY 11232
    (718)832-8553

If you don't have a car, there are lots of guys with vans outside the Hamilton Ave one that will drive you home with all your stuff for a reasonable (negotiable) price.

    Time for Zipcar!
  • isn't there a place on vanderbilt?!
  • There is a small harware store on flatbush and I think St Marks. I definately bought some 2x3's there.

The guys there are extremely nice and helpful. They've let me return things that were not defective (eg. an extension cord I bought with the wrong kind of prongs for my outlet). They will also often suggest less expensive ways to do things if you explain to them what your project is. Obviously, with the small size of the store, the selection is not exhaustive, but I've found that they usually have what I need. And you definitely get more prompt personal attention than at Pintchik (I went to the place for the first time after walking out of Pintchik frustrated from waiting over 30 minutes trying to get someone to help me on a busy Saturday).

True that, and they are always playing some awesome retro funkyass music too
  • Ask Daffodil Hardware what they have to say. Vanderbilt & Bergen.
  • If you can transport everything you need on the bus - take the bus that goes up Bedford in Crown Heights to East Williamsburg and get off on Lorimer and Meserole. Meserole Lumber is an awesome place with good deals and helpful staff. It's 20 Meserole St.
  • Modern Lumber on 4th and St. Marks will lend you a cart to get your stuff home. Ends up being a bit of a schlep, but at least you're not carrying everything on your shoulder...

The best lumber yard in the area is Dykes on 6th St. below 3rd. Good service and they have been here for a long time. Also best source for moldings in the area.

Modern Way on 4th an St. Marks. Okay for 2 X 4's

Screw Home Depot and Lowes! Have you ever attempted to ask a question in one of those stores?

That was the place I was thinking about I thought it was on 8th Street and thanks for the tip I didn't know they carried mouldings.

Their prices for sheetrock are also pretty good (plus they will deliver free in the neighborhood)

I agree with you about Home Depot but I always seem to get fast attention and pretty knowledgeable salespeople at Lowes.

Do any of you know whether any of these places will cut lumber to order? I want to build shelves in my kitchen, but the space where I want to put them is an odd width for pre-made shelving. If I could just get the wood cut the right size I've got the rest of the equipment and know how to install shelves myself.
  • modern way has cut lumber for us.

(not like home depot, who, when we asked them to rip a board for us (aka, cut just a small amount off) said no, "that's DANGEROUS". well, duh. that's why i'm asking YOU to do it. dad was right, it's not a real lumber yard if everyone still has all their fingers.)

For that I recommend Dykes on 6th Street bet. 3rd and 2nd Ave. They have the lumber that is already primed so all you have to do is paint. If you are having trouble just PM me I have the tools at the house and can cut it for you if you want.
  • Thanks Stacey and Sweet Tea! I think I'll try Modern Way this weekend, and if that doesn't work out I may PM you, Stacey, and take you up on your offer.

Sweet Tea, you're SO right about lumberyard guys. Same goes for high school shop teachers!
  • really, i just miss my favorite chicago place, which was everything a lumberyard should be, and had the added bonus of this amazing name:
